HASH(0x92c5fe28) étoiles sur 5 Not their best effort, but still a good show 3 mai 2013
Par Svilen Trifonov - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
I'll try to keep this brief - if you want to see the "new" Whitesnake on DVD, stick to Live: In the Still of the Night. It may be almost 10-years-old now, but it's one of the greatest testaments of why Whitesnake is such a great band.

The current Made In Japan Double CD/DVD issue is frankly a little disappointing.

First, the DVD: - it's a little dark, the stage lighting isn't very impressive. Other than that, it has good camera work and the overall quality is good. The show is a little bit on the short side, but what can you do...David is not 30 anymore.

The Two Audio CDs:
- as others have noted, the volume is turned up quite high on the first CD. I can barely stand listening to it in the car. It just doesn't sound very clear - just shouty and boomy (and no, it's not my car's stereo - the Forevermore CD sounds terrific in there).
- tracklisting - this is all a matter of personal preference, but I still don't think Best Years is a very good opening track (or a Whitesnake track altogether). But the biggest problem by far is...the drum solo! It's okay on the DVD, I can live with it, but why do bands insist on releasing drum solos on Audio CDs. Back in the day, the only ones I liked were Cozy Powell's because they were musical, had a backing track to them. This is just some dude banging on drums for 6 minutes (in an already rather short setlist). Can anyone honestly say that they are going to listen to a 6 minute drum solo on their daily commute in their car? I don't think so. No offense to Brian Tichy - I really like him as a drummer, I just don't understand why the drum solo should be on an official release.
- CD 2 is probably my favorite - the acoustic tracks rock. I think along with Forevermore from the first disc, they are the best tracks on this release.

In the end, I bought the Deluxe Package and I don't regret it because I like to support David Coverdale - he is one of my all-time heroes and a genuinely nice guy. But if you are not such a big fan, consider this: the MP3 version here on Amazon is only $6.99 (at the moment at least) for both Audio CD. For such a price, this is a steal. I recommend it - you will definitely find tracks that you will like. Others (like the drum solo) you can just delete.

HASH(0x92c7024c) étoiles sur 5 Some of it is great, but MAJOR wasted opportunity 4 mai 2013
Par TruthTeller - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Really think this thing was a bit of a wasted opportunity. Some of it like the live Forevermore title track, Best Years etc, that's all really good. But stuff like Lay Down Your Love and Evil Ways etc, from the bonus "soundcheck" CD, that stuff needed to be in the full set - the DVD is just over an hour long, and that's with a probably a 5 minute drum solo and about 8 or 9 minutes of guitar duelling. Most of the songs were already on Live In the Still of the Night.

If they were gonna do a DVD they needed to sit down, work out what songs needed to be on it, rehearse it, do the show and film it. Not do a short festival show show and think "oh, lets put this out on DVD".

Stuff that they've played with Reb and Doug that *isn't* on DVD that should be because it wasn't on the last DVD :

Good to be Bad
Walkin in the Shadow of the Blues
Slide It In
The Deeper the Love (full band and also acoustic just with Doug)
Now You're Gone (last year UK tour)

They're on tour in Japan (again) at the moment, they're playing Can You Hear The Wind Blow, Guilty of Love and Gambler. THAT stuff needed to be on a DVD and live album, not a bunch of stuff they've already done.

HASH(0x92c702c4) étoiles sur 5 Tokyo Set Alight By A Live Whitesnake. 23 avril 2013
Par M. Mariba - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This is a live double CD release by British heavy metal band Whitesnake titled 'Made In Japan'. The double CD (20 tracks) was recorded live in Tokyo, Japan in 2011: the band plays well, good quality sound and production.

Disc 1 (12 tracks): Stand-out tracks/gems/my favourite performances are "Love Ain't No Stranger" (wonderful melody/vocals and the fans go bullistic during the performance of this song) & my all time Whitesnake favourite song "Here I Go Again". Who can forget great guitar works in "Steal Your Heart Away" & "Six String Showdown". There are 2 only okay tracks in "Drum Solo" & "Still Of The Night", the remaining 8 tracks are good entertaining tracks. This is my favourite disc of the two.

Disc 2 (8 tracks): Stand-out track/gem/favourite track is "Fare Thee Well (Acoustic version)" : great guitar chords and melody. This disc is more laid-back compared to the first disc as it's predominately acoustic (I really like acoustic arrangements by heavy metal or alternative rock bands). The remaining 7 tracks are great live performances with no weak track.

On overall, Whitesnake did set Tokyo on fire in 2011 with a great live performance. A recommended CD listening.

HASH(0x92c70654) étoiles sur 5 It's David Coverdale! 28 avril 2013
Par D. Newman - Publié sur Amazon.com

The Whitesnake line-up has been fluid since their comeback in the 80's. Coverdale surrounds himself with the best musicians, much like Ozzy and Dio (R.I.P.) have through the years. David Coverdale and Whitesnake are just as incredible now as they were in the 70's. This album is a testament to the amazing talent of David Coverdale. The band is of course incredible too. To me any true Whitesnake fan not owning this album would be a tragedy. Every Whitesnake fan knows all of the musicians on the album, their history and other bands they have played in. There is no reason to get into all of the that. If you are on the fence about purchasing this album, just do it! This album is not for the new Whitesnake fan but all of you old guys and gals need to just get it. I do want to give a plug for Reb Beach however, his performance is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on this album.

HASH(0x92c70684) étoiles sur 5 A "Good" Record - I'd give it a B- 25 avril 2013
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
When I found the words "Made In Japan" on an item's a label, in my childhood years, there was a chance the item was going to be cheap and not of high quality, though that has obviously changed a great deal since then. With this album, depending on your point of view, it may or may not have changed all that much.

Whitesnake is a band that always reminds me of college and parties, which is why I rarely turn them off when they are played somewhere, even though they are not exactly a "cool" band these days. I was surprised to see that Coverdale and his current incarnation of musicians (Whitesnake has never had a permanent line-up other than their lead singer) are still touring, although I did know that they were still recording. The DVD from this set shows a very fired up audience in a concert hall in Tokyo being treated to a smokin' concert. The musicianship from this band is just phenomenal. Drummer Brian Tichy and lead guitar Doug Aldrich are fantastic; but, really, no one is worse than very good. Liner notes from the bass player Michael Devin are a good read. He's a smart guy, a good writer with an eye for detail; much smarter than he'd like you to believe.

I had read about Coverdale's vocal cord injury several years ago and was curious to hear him sing. The sad, hard truth is that he's not what he once was - this is not the Castle Donington concert in 1990. He tends to growl things out a little in this show and I wondered whether he had a slight cold that day, but because the recording was already set to go simply had to push on. (He is better on the acoustic songs on the Bonus Audio disc - much better in some cases.) The vocal tracks as well as guitars and drums do NOT have an overly "live" sound - there is not much audience noise or hall ambience on this record. In fact, other than the very, very deep low end, the sound signature is a little reminiscent of Rush's Exit Stage Left. I wonder if there was any post-concert patching done?

Song selection - 12 songs from all different albums. Probably not as long of a setlist as most fans will want, but given Coverdale's vocal capabilities on this night, perhaps this was a necessity. As others have mentioned, several songs have been tuned down a key or two. Standout tracks - Is This Love, Here I Go Again, Still Of The Night.

Despite these caveats, I don't regret purchasing this disc set. I would rate it a "good" album on balance. Some elements of it are "great" - particularly the band's contributions to the concert, the very high quality packaging, and the video quality of the DVD. With Coverdale in better form, with these musicians, I easily could have rated "Made In Japan" 2 stars higher.
