HASH(0x9619e240) étoiles sur 5 Still great after all these years 1 octobre 2005
Par Tom - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This was one of the sleeper albums of 1974. Anyone who owns this on vinyl has been waiting 30 years for this to finally come out. Of course, it never sold well. Jim Morrison casts a long shadow, and if you approach a listen to this album expecting to hear "Roadhouse Blues," you'll be disappointed. But if you give this a listen as a Ray Manzarek album, you'll wonder why this album didn't get more airplay. It's a strong piece of work throughout, and stands up well to this day through repeated listens. If you own the vinyl, you'll be interested to know that the sound quality is excellent. If you own the original CD release of "The Golden Scarab," which had three songs from this album, yes, it's worth it to buy this to get the other 5 tracks. My favorite is "Bicentennial Blues," which has an updated version of his organ solo from "Light My Fire" that totally rocks.

HASH(0x9619e648) étoiles sur 5 I've been waiting 31 years for this! 26 décembre 2005

It's a pity that the many great talents that comprised the Doors were so overshadowed by Jim Morrison's lugubrious presence. I was lucky enough to have ready access to cut-out bins full of vinyl records, from which I plucked such post-Doors gems as Full Circle, Other Voices, Golden Scarab, The Whole Thing and Butts Band (Robbie and John's project with Jess Roden). Too, I was lucky enough to be at an age where I was seeking for the words of wisdom that fill both this album and the Golden Scarab, for Ray's deep, experiential spirituality flows through these works like a river. This isn't the Mrs. Grundy spirituality peddled in your Sunday school sermons, either--this is the spirituality of a life on fire for experience, knowledge, good times and rock and roll! It is the stuff of dreams, but the dream is Life itself. Those with ears to hear will hear everything that is needed to survive this life intact in this work and, of course, in the Golden Scarab.

Ray must have had his absolute pick of the label's stable, for the greatest lights in modern music strut beautifully upon his stage, lending a brilliance to his words and music that I've not seen equaled since. Musical allusions will delight Doors fans, while those fond of obscure talents will scratch their heads and ask: isn't that Flo and Eddie? The Danny Sugarmen singers (Archies, Josie and the Pussycats, et al)? George Segal on Banjo? John Klemmer on Sax?

Don't miss this treat!

HASH(0x9619e6c0) étoiles sur 5 I love this crazy little album 2 janvier 2012

Ray Manzarek / The whole thing started with Rock N Roll now it's out of control: This is no masterpiece, it's not even essential, but I love everything about this album. His singing here is good and his keyboard work is as excellent as ever. The selections of songs are fun (but not great). However, the title song is a favorite of mine. "I wake up screaming" includes the Jim Morrison poem, read by none other than the future Punk Poetess Patti Smith (her first album appearance, although the production of the song nearly drowns her out). The list of other artists helping with this album is surprising with Flo & Eddie, Joe Walsh, and even the actor George Segal adding a little banjo. There will only be a few people interested in this album, but for those of us who discovered it when it first came out, it remains a treasure. Perhaps you will discover it to be a treasure as well (or you'll be wondering why you spent the money on it). I love it so I give it Five Stars, but I remind you again, it is an unessential release, and an acquired taste.

From the greatest keyboard player to ever draw a breath on God's green earth comes Ray Manzarek's 2nd and best album. What a powerful album it is, too! Bicentennial Blues has the most WICKED organ solo I've ever heard. Highly recommended for that song alone.

Released in 1974, this was Ray Manzarek's 2nd solo album, though unlike the jazz fusion-inspired concept album 'The Golden Scarab' (also from 1974), Ray chose a more commercial route, keeping reign on his jazz leanings while moving closer to the rock idiom courtesy of notable guest guitarists such as Joe Walsh and Lou Reed sidekick Dick Wagner, while ex-Turtles vocalists Flo & Eddie lend their distinctive harmonies.
The (opening) title-track is a walloping pop/rocker, Flo & Eddie's euphoric harmonies and brass-laden backing merging with great effect as biting guitar lines clinch the deal.
Ray's jazz tendencies come to the fore on the instrumental 'Whirling Dervish' and most notably on 'Bicentennial Blues' which features Ray jamming on the 'Light My Fire' chord progression with his trademark swirling, flowing keyboard style to the fore.
The rockier side of the album manifests itself on 'The Gambler' (with its mellow opening and anthemic chorus, showcasing more great guitar licks) and 'I Wake Up Screaming', a straight-up rocker which features punk poetess Patti Smith reciting a poem written by a certain J.D.Morrison during its spacey mid-section.
The true mark of this album is how Manzarek skilfully blends pop, rock and jazz into a seamless whole, giving the album a nice 'flow', while his vocals are strong and authoritative - something which often came to the fore on The Doors' two post-Morrison albums 'Other Voices' and 'Full Circle'.
This album gave Manzarek his only foray into the Billboard 200, reaching #150.
This is a must have for Doors collectors who, like myself, admire Manzarek's post-Doors studio recordings. Try it.
