Présentation de l'éditeur

Here is the remarkable and inspirational autobiography of Ann Wigmore, an internationally recognized name synonymous with the discovery and use of raw and living foods for nutrition and health. This fascinating first-hand account includes stories from Ann's early childhood, watching her grandmother heal the sick in war-torn Central Europe. Engrossing behind-the-scenes anecdotes reveal how Ann formed her philosophy of healing and became inspired to create the Hippocrates Institute, the first health center that relied on the use of sprouts and wheatgrass for healing.

This now-classic autobiography weaves a compelling narrative that shows how Ann's religious faith supported natural healing and how her positive nature and independent spirit helped her overcome every limitation she encountered. It demands a new respect for the early pioneer of the movement, even from those who already hold her in high esteem.

This book is not a health advice book, although it contains a lot of inspiring information on healing.
Why Suffer? is the autobiography of Ann Wigmore up until the founding of the Hippocrates Health Institute.

The story begins with Ann Wigmore as a young girl in Lithuania, raised by her grandmother. Her grandmother is the local healer, using fresh goat milk, rye grass, herbs, and mud to heal anyone that comes her way through WWI. Ann's story could be a feature film - she befriends local animals, survives raiders on the village, and makes it through the war with her grandmother.

Each twist and turn in her life eventually leads up to her fulfilling the destiny her grandmother saw for her, as someone who heals others.
Even if you aren't a follower of Ann Wigmore, or not a wheat grass drinker, this book is an exciting read, the first half reads like an adventure novel for older children. (along the lines of the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, but with more scary events & deaths) Beginning with the boat journey across the Atlantic to America, life becomes a lot less fun and the book is probably not suitable for children. However, if you are interested in health and enjoy adventure stories, you will probably like this story. It is written in an engaging first person style.

Be aware however, that if you are looking for recipes or how to grow sprouts, a different book would be more suitable.

Ann Wigmore's autobiography is amazing and inspirational. Aside from being my introduction to the healing benefits of wheatgrass, reading about Ann's childhood experiences with her grandmother in a war-torn village in central Europe and her eventual immigration to the United States, held my interest. I found this book hard to put down. Ann Wigmore's story evoked many feelings within me... Love, compassion for all living beings, deep faith and dedication to a higher good. It is a great choice for someone who seeks centering. It will bring you there even if you were not aware that you needed it. After reading this book, I bought, 'Wheatgrass, Nature's Finest Medicine,' by Steve Meyerowitz. I wanted more information about wheatgrass, and this is another fascinating book that will give you a real understanding of what wheatgrass is all about. Four friends and family members as well as myself, have begun our wheatgrass journey to health and balance, all because I became interested in the story of this little girl's childhood in Europe. I believe this book may change your life as well.

In 50 years I have read at least 500 books on health. This is one of the few that I read every so often. Ann Wigmore was a solid champion of "what works" and was a tireless worker in gathering ideas and trying them. Her grandmother in Lithuania was an outstanding herb doctor and Ann Wigmore owes her life and her life's work to her grandmother. Get this book while it's still in print and pass it on to your family and friends.
