Four Legged Kiwi Gems 22 décembre 2008
Par Peter Herring - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
The well-known landscape photographer Kevin Judd turns his hand to capturing the dogs of NZ wineries.

If you have ever tried to take a shot of a dog you will know how difficult it can be. You often end up with an empty frame with just background in it because the dog has vanished. Judd explains his initiation in a straightforward way and reveals the secret of how he successfully joined the Wine Dog Whisperers. You will need to read the book to find out how he does it! All in all, a great Wine Dogs debut from this photographer - the personalities of the pooches shine through.

Fire from Two Paddocks is Sam Neill's dog. Everyone knows Sam - but not everyone knows that he is a top maker of Central Otago Pinot Noir. His wine enterprise has been flourishing since the first vintage in 1997 and is built on selected Burgundian clones. Two Paddocks is a family business originally started as a source of wine for family and friends but has surpassed all expectations. The winery dog Fire is deaf and relies on lipreading to tell when it's time to go for a walk. Well, let's face it, Fire relies on lipreading for all communication from humans. Sam Neill has written a story about his beloved Fire. It's a good thing Sam doesn't need to give up the day job.

Another story is by John Saker and is "Chez Jef". It is a wistful tale of a dog adopted out when the owners are unable to bring it to New Zealand from Provence.

Several cats lurk in the background of some of these shots. One in particular is Tosca from Mount Riley Wines and it has its ears flattened and eyes beady whilst Ruby the Hungarian Vizsla has her photo taken. It's a beauty, that shot.

There's Twig, the 17 day-old Wessex Saddleback from Pyramid Valley. What's that? Never heard of a Wessex Saddleback dog? You'll have to read the book to find out the details.

I love the beautiful, pointy Flash, the short-haired Border Collie from Matua Valley Wines. I could take this dog home.

Nautilus Estate's Jazz, on page 84, looks to be saying "Go on, Kevin, give us a kiss". The book has an engaging selection of stories ending with the appropriately titled "On the Perils of Photographing Winedogs" by Bob Campbell. Kevin Judd has given us some great visuals here - looking forward to volume 2.

I saw this on my travel through New Zealand inside one of the mentioned wineries in the book. I decided to buy a few online when I returned to have on hand as hostess gifts. They've been a big hit with wine and dog lovers!

Beautiful! The dogs are the stars but New Zealand wine country featuring in the backround makes me want to take the next flight to Kiwi land. I'm an absolute fan of all the wine dogs books, but this one is really special.
