Présentation de l'éditeur

Over 14 days at the heart of the Battle of Britain, Spitfire pilots Jack and Alex struggle to survive the savage battles raging in the air over southern England.
Several times a day, they fly against overwhelming odds, witnessing the death and disfigurement of friends and enemies, and wrestling with the knowledge that the same could happen to them at any moment.
Brief periods on the ground offer little respite, with Biggin Hill subjected to frequent air raids, during which many more friends are killed.
Both find love, but the Battle takes its toll.
The flying scenes in Wings Over Summer are especially vivid, perhaps because Ron Powell spent much of his 32 years in the RAF as a flying instructor, teaching young men and women to turn upside down, jink and spin in light aircraft. He also met several Battle of Britain veterans and, more than anything, hopes Wings Over Summer will stand as a tribute to their courage.
The cover design is based on Paolo Camera's Spitfire In Cloud.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Churchill was right about the R.A.F. 26 juillet 2013

Powell knows pilots and he captures the lives of R.A.F. pilots in a most graphic manner. He brings the early years of WWII right to your mind. The action in the air over England while flying Spitfires and Hurricanes, mixing it up several times a day with ME-109's and ME-110's makes you realize the super human effort that was made by these warriors of the sky. The cramped cockpit of these fighters that are rife with the smells of oil, smoke, sweat and fire is so alive in your mind as you become engrossed in the "Dog fights".

Throughout the ages warriors have been attracted to and found their fair maidens. The men of "Wings over Summer" are no exception. These young men are totally committed to saving the British Empire from the onslaught of the Nazi war machine. They are often matching up against 10 to 1 odds several times a day, day after day. Yet they still find time to be the virile young men that they are. Young men, many still in their teens and yet considered veterans of the air war after only a week in battle. The replacement pilots looking with awe at them while searching for the guidance that can save their lives.

Lust for some of the men, but love for others. Death becomes an everyday fact. Many of the survivors suffer injuries and disfigurement as the war takes its toll. However, time doesn't allow these brave pilots time to dwell on death, injuies or disfigurement. From the pilots to the ground crews to the support crews; each and everyone of them know that they must fight to the death or their country will be destroyed by the Nazi Luftwaffe.

This is a hard book to put down. You will actually start feeling the fatigue of air battle after air battle numerous times a day. The actual time of the fights are not that long, but the stress on the body and the mind is overwhelming.
There are men; who either collapse under the stress or become careless thus paying the supreme price while others trudge on fighting for God and Country. And, who can ever fault these men for seeking love in only the smallest amounts of time that they are allowed. They literally have to steal few hours here and there to even be in the presence of a woman. Then it is back in the air, where you can't think of her or you will soon be dead.

I have to say of the many WWII books that I have read, "Wings over Summer" is one of the most interesting, exciting, and action packed accounts of the early air war over England. Powell has really brought this historically war charged time, right into your hands. You will be pulling on the stick, stepping on the rudders and firewalling the throttle subconciously while you are reading. This is a book you don't want to miss.

Having spent my military career flying, it is easy to be critical of any book describing the events and the emotions that take place in the cockpit during aerial combat. This author knows what he is talking about. If you are an aviation enthusiast or military historian then this book will satisfy each to its capacity. Simply stated...'Wings Over Summer' is spot on.

A truly fabulous read!
A brilliant take on the physical and mental struggle of the young pilots who fought the air battle of Britain.
As a writer and US Navy carrier flyer I appreciated this book on all levels. I began this review last night moments after I finished reading Mr. Powell's story. I felt compelled to write the review while I was in the emotional thrall of his words. As I began to write I was overcome and put my review aside. As a television writer I've often hoped that a project I'm doing will connect with my audience in a special way. Every once in a while a show or episode I've written generates a response that validates that hope. Without a doubt for so many reasons, my hours in the air have been the high point of my life (don't tell the my kids) but there are moments that Mr. Powell wrote of that brought tears of pure joy to my eyes. Powell has documented these occurrences even as his characters expierenced them seconds before entering deadly battle. As a writer I doubt I've ever given my audience those emotional experiences. I must offer Mr. Powell my heartfelt thanks for his success in achieving this artistic goal..,
