When I first looked at this book, I saw that it was written by someone involved in the Harvard Project on Negotiation. I've read some books from authors there (including a few by William Ury who wrote the foreward for this book):

Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In
Getting Past No: Negotiating with Difficult People
The Power of a Positive No: Save The Deal Save The Relationship and Still Say No
Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most

All those books helped me be better in business. They helped me with techniques and approaches to negotiate. While they often seemed to promise more than they delivered, they did deliver a lot.

This book delivers little. It might be good as a self-help book that you read for inspiring personal stories and anecdotes, if you like that sort of thing (and I sometimes do). But the author promises in the book's subtitle to deliver a "Breakthrough Method for Leading, Living, and Lasting Change." If there was a method in the book, I missed it. And I was looking pretty carefully. There's no method there.

The author talks about the "Big Four" in all of us: our inner Dreamer, Thinker, Lover and Warrior. We need to "Balance Our Profile" by letting each of those aspects of our inner selves participate in our personalities. Sorry, to me that seems like a bunch of balderdash. Too touchy, feely for me. I want solid substance, not fluff.

As if those Big Four were not enough, we also have to "Connect to Our Core" by paying attention to our Lookout, our Captain, and our Voyager. How do we do that? Hard to say. We just get a bunch of anecdotes -- many of them personal, as we hear about the author's marriage to a Dutchman, her picture-taking with Barack Obama, and her dear personal friend who is a former head of state. Nothing structured.

That seems to work for some people. The author claims to be a popular speaker, an in-demand consultant, a New York Times Bestselling author, and that the book is being translated into 10 languages. Some reviews here on Amazon seem pretty positive. And I don't want to criticize an author too heavily. Writing a book is hard. Writing a review is easy.

Still, this book did little for me. I read about my Dreamer, Thinker, Lover, Warrior, Lookout, Captain and Voyager. But I can't think of a single thing that I was able to learn from the book and put into practice in my life or my work. Maybe the author -- who must be very bright to teach at Harvard -- might be better to work with in person.

This is a tedious book that repeats its main point again and again. It takes 389 pages to state the obvious:we think of ourselves as a single integrated person;we are not, as Shakespeare understood;thus, we need to look at the types of selves we have inside us and learn to work with and harmonize them. Good diagrams on the types. There are lots of better books, including "Inner Excellence" by Jim Murphy. Also, the book's ongoing example of how she learned to understand the selves---her marriage to a Dutchman and move to Europe---is indulgence. Example:"I had to learn that the Dutch take their coffee seriously, and there would be no simple coffee maker in my new house, taught me a lot. " Take a pass.

The author claims that people can approach problems through four personas; Dreamer, Thinker, Lover and Warrior, which are overseen by three further characters; the Lookout, Captain and Voyager. Given the authors credentials I was hoping for some interesting original insights, however I found the content was longwinded, repetitive and a little derivative. In the authors schema, the book was written almost entirely with the Lovers voice, with no innovation (Dreamer), or actionable (Warrior) content and shallow analysis (Thinker). I think The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change is a much better book, with more actionable content and better tools for helping you bring about personal change.

One of my favorite quotes is from the comic strip character Pogo (1949 - 1975), "We have met the enemy and it is us." I realize that idea was first captured by Sophocles when he said, "The greatest griefs are those we cause ourselves." We often refer to this concept in our daily lives when we declare something like, "He's his own worst enemy."

If you are honest, you will probably admit to more than a few times when you did things that were not in your best interest. And if you are like me and most others, you have often promised yourself that from now on you are going to mend your ways. We often make promises along the lines, "Just get me out of this mess and I promise to never ______________."

Erica Ariel Fox, the author of Winning From Within, has written a very engaging book that helps us understand why we are often our own worst enemy. But, as she points out, understanding and insights alone do not lead to permanent change. You must put those understandings and insights into practice. She gives us plenty of examples of how to put the concepts into action.

Ms. Fox is a Harvard trained attorney and has many years experience leading workshops on negotiations. The main point she makes in this book is that the most important negotiations we have are the ones with ourselves. Unless we can effectively negotiate with ourselves - unless we stop negotiating against ourselves - we will never win at the game of life. It all starts with learning about our inner self - the different parties/interest within.

When you think of the different parties within, according to Ms. Fox there are literally hundreds. But, in the book she deals with the Big Four - in business terms the CEO, CFO, HR and COO. In more humanistic terms, the Dreamer, Thinker, Lover and Warrior. Often we lead our lives with one or two of the Big Four dominating our actions. This leads to an unbalanced life - either too focused on the bottom line or dreaming too big with inadequate action.

The chapters on the Big Four are very well done - easy to read, engaging and insightful. There are plenty of examples to illustrate the concepts.

Of course, the Big Four are not the only forces/feelings you need to deal with. On top of the Big Four - the Dreamer, Thinker, Lover and Warrior are three very important other forces to help you connect to your core being. They are: the Lookout, the Captain and the Voyager. The Captain is the ultimate director of your life. But, the Captain needs to take input from the Lookout and the Voyager and additionally must direct the Big Four to work together and present a balanced view.

There is so much wisdom contained in this book. For example, when discussing the Voyager, Ms. Fox states, "Your Voyager stands for the idea that you have choices, and that ultimately, your create your life." There are literally dozens of other profound insights just like this one. You will not absorb them all in one reading.

Ms. Fox shares plenty of her own story in this book. One of the reasons this book is so valuable is because of the very personal way she relates to the reader. She comes across as a very good friend, sitting across the table having a insightful conversation. Her writing style is very engaging. She takes a very complex subject and makes it easy to understand. She is not writing about theory but about concepts she has personally experienced.

If you are struggling to win at the game of life, first understand that it starts within. This book is a wonderful resource, giving you a step by step process for how to negotiate with yourself so that you are on the winning team.

Winning from Within: A Breakthrough Method for Lading, Living and Lasting Change by Erica Ariel Fox is a book about negotiation. Every day, whether we are aware of it or not we face a series of negotiations. Each of these effects other aspects of our lives. Fox combines Western psychology with principles from Eastern philosophy and shows various ways to balance our lives in that process in order to win or "gain mastery:.

I read a great number of self-help books. I have to say I was a little disappointed with this one in that the format was really rather scattered. The reflection questions and exercises really just were really not something I had a great deal of patience for and so I admit I skipped over them. I really wanted to like this book, but could not get into it.
