Présentation de l'éditeur

In this sparkling, witty and impassioned essay – delivered as the keynote lecture at the Jaipur Literature Festival 2014 – Amartya Sen meets the Goddess of Medium Things who promises him seven wishes, one for each day of the week. As he spars with the goddess who is often bemused by his demands, Sen writes of the seven changes he thinks India needs most, from improving the teaching of humanities to abolishing Article 377. Humorous in tone, yet deeply serious in intent, A Wish a Day for a Week is a marvellous essay and an important blueprint for India’s development from one of our great thinkers.

I was reminded while reading this carefully planned story, how much I saw the similarities between Sen's wishes for India and my wishes for the United States. We live in a time of religious animosity, economic inequality, and the reemergence of severe nationalisms in the context of increasing globalization. The wish of Sen's that most echoed in my mind was that of "business interests not having to link-up with religious conservatism" (not an exact quote). Here in the US the Republican Party has been hijacked by Christian Nationalists that have much, it seems from an outside observer, in common with the Hindu Nationalists of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Islamophobic violence is normalized here and is advocated especially in an imperialist context by Christian Nationalists. This is unacceptable.

The problems to which Sen points are very real but he is skimpy about how to get to a solution. Also, income disparity is worldwide and not just an Indian problem.

Finally he deplores the selective abortion of females but nothing against abortion as such. If a million female fetuses are aborted and only a thousand males, then that is bad. But a million of EACH is fine. But how are the female fetuses helped just by killing more males? This progressive illogic has always bothered me.

I do appreciate his emphasis on Sankrit, Farsi etc. And his goddess is both tolerant and possessing of a sense of humor so she is probably not modeled on Kali, the patron goddess of Sen's home state of Bengal.

Finally, not to blow my own horn, but my paper on Social Software, in Synthese 2002 may be worth reading. Sen was once a first rate mathematician and surely he understands that problems in society often arise, not because some people are evil, but for structural reasons. I suspect that the rich were not less evil 50 years ago, but somehow the internet and globalization have now helped them to become far too rich.

Structures ARE pointed to by Searle in his book, Making the Social World, but he leaves out algorithmic elements which are crucial in addressing social problems. The subfield of game theory called Economic Design needs to be expanded to a much larger field, addressing not only economic but also human problems.

All these things are possible (or so we must hope) and I hope Sen will some day take logical and algorithmic issues in society seriously. Ethics is useless without a MEANS to be ethical.

Wonderful, insightful, and humorous. Only Amartya Sen can combine this type of authoritative insight with humor.

Routine stuff that one finds in popular press. But a good effort to be entertaining, although somewhat strained and arty.

A brilliant way to deliver a keynote address from standpoint of his own expertise in a Literary Festival highlighting contemporary issues plaguing the nation in instead of the customary refererences to latest trends in regional literary scenario.
