Présentation de l'éditeur

Love was never part of his plan…until it pounced.

As heir to an old and proud heritage, Aubrey Reynolds works and lives for his family, his employees and his pack. Agreeing to watch after a visiting werewolf is no big deal—until he discovers the newcomer is his mate. His very male mate…which is a very big deal, indeed. Revealing his sexuality was never part of Aubrey’s well-ordered life plan.

Much as he loved caring for his eight younger brothers, Matt Mahihkan knows it’s time to grab the opportunity to attend college in Atlanta. Realizing Aubrey is his mate should have been a delightful experience…except Aubrey treats him more like a dirty little secret than a lover. Yet Matt is a patient man. Aubrey can’t stay in the closet forever. Can he?

In time, they settle into a comfortable, if complicated, routine. Until a rogue werewolf with an axe to grind forces Aubrey to add to the wedge of secrets driving him and Matt apart, leaving Matt exposed to danger…and Aubrey forced to choose between love and duty.

Warning: Contains color abuse with a really bad sense of fashion, a southern accent from hell, sex on antique furniture, a pouncing playful werewolf, obnoxious siblings, liberal use of a color identifier and impatient sex. No lightning bugs were harmed in the making of this book.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 It was Good But not my Favorite 24 mars 2011

I waited quite a while for this one because I liked the first 3 in the series so much. At first, I thought I was going to be disappointed - the book started slow and did really seem to have much of a direction other than it was going to use the open gay guy/closeted gay guy storyline ...

Then the sub-plots started picking up and and started getting messier and I could see this was going to be a fun read. The Jordan sub-plot wasn't really necessary and tended to feel repetitive - how many of her werewolf books need to have stalkers?

After a slow start, the main story line got good. I enjoyed the book overall - it was a fun read - but I think it's my least favorite in the With/Without series.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Amazing--and ROMANTIC--M/M romance novel! 23 mars 2011

I've read all of the other books written by J. L. Langley and have enjoyed them. Some were better than others, and at times either the characters or the writing were not as polished as one could wish, but they've all been enjoyable. I was looking forward to this one, but was expecting more of the same.

With Abandon is by far the best book of Langley's With or Without series, but more than that, this was the best book I'd read in a long time (and with a book a day reading habit, that's saying something).

With a lot of M/M romances, the focus is more on the sex than the relationship, bordering on erotica. With a lot of werewolf stories, the concept of a predestined mate also makes it easy to forgo the real relationship building. This book has sex (some pretty steamy sex, for that matter) and does use the concept of a predestined mate, but the relationship building was the focus. And it was terribly romantic.

The characters were well-developed and easy to relate to. Matt was a breath of fresh air--caring, clumbsy, and enjoying every moment of his life. His innocence and naivite were charming and did not come off as forced or comic. Aubrey was deeper, with too many responsibilities weighing down on him--always doing what was needed and expected. Their strengths balanced each other perfectly, as should happen with a good romance, but with enough in common to make it believable.

There's so much joy in this novel. One scene in particular, with the characters running as wolves, transported me to a different, more joyful place. It takes a in a book to make WANT to review it--it either has to be terrible or amazing in some way. While the book may never win a prestigious award, it ranks right up there at the top of the genre...a true romance, with engaging, likable characters.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A fun and endaring addition to the With/Without series 27 mars 2011

I give this book about 4.5 stars, rounded up to a five. It has good pacing, good characterizations, an engaging writing style, and pulls you into its world of werewolf shifters.

Matt (introduced to us in "With Caution") has been accepted to Georgia University. He's 20, very much a klutz, and dresses with the most odd color combinations imaginable. His mentor, Keaton, arranges for him to stay with Keaton's older brother Aubrey. Aubrey was introduced to us in "Without Reservations" (both previous books are excellent, by the way), and he was painted there as intolerant of Keaton's sexuality, having attacked Keaton with the help of friends and forcing Keaton to leave the family.

It only takes the initial meeting for the two men to realize that they are mates (no big surprise there). In this world, everybody has a mate (think "soulmate")... that one person perfect for them that excites, fulfills, and completes them in every way. Werewolves, because they're so in touch with their instincts, physically recognize their mates and it's almost pointless to try to resist the attraction. The only problem is that Aubrey is the President of the family business (a very successful hotel chain), his parents expect him to marry and produce and heir, and Georgia is not exactly embracing gay relationships with open arms. A rival CEO had to step down from his position when it was revealed he was in a relationship with a man, and Aubrey knows that no good will come of people discovering his relationship with Matt.

All of this sets up the storyline as Aubrey at first tries to resist the mating instinct, and then tries to hide it. Being very much an alpha, he naturally tries to take control of all elements of his life... including Matt. In doing so, he runs the serious risk of pushing Matt away. To add to Aubrey's troubles, one of his peers is posing a danger to Aubrey, his mate, and his friend. What's a werewolf to do?

J.L. Langley has an engaging writing style that pulls you in and endears you to the story. The plot flows along at a brisk pace, and the central emphasis is on Aubrey's and Matt's relationship with each other. The suspense is toned down a bit and could have been given a little more spotlight, and Matt does get walked on a bit by Aubrey without ever confronting him, which is a little distracting. But overall, the writing style, pacing, characterizations, and heartfelt emotions do make this a VERY enjoyable book. I recommend all three books be read in sequence. Though each is a standalone story, they do introduce characters and plots that are used in later stories. Besides, all three books are wonderfully fun reads, with each book having its own unique feel. The books are "Without Reservations" and "With Caution" (in that order). There is a shorter novella called "With Love" that is set in the same world, and is fun, but is totally standalone.

I feel like I missed the boat. Everyone seems to have enjoyed this book, unfortunately I'm not one of them. I thought the book was long and boring. The sex was dry and weak nothing like the another books in this series. I mark the release date of this book on my iPhone, couldn't wait to read it but in the end I was skipping pages just to get though it. Boring.

The premise is good but the story doesn't hold up.

It jumps from scene to scene without a good connection, giving a choppy effect and jerking you out of the story. The continuity is horrible and conflicts with information in prior books. At one point Aubrey is thinking about being 11 years older than Matt, which would make Matt 20 but then Logan is 18 and that would make Matt older since the short stories establish Logan and Sterling as in school together. Or are we supposed to believe Sterling at 15 is hanging out with an 18 year old. In some parts we are given to understand that it is a year later but others make it sound like it is many years later.

And could the author please find a way of discribing kisses beside saying he 'slanted his mouth' over the other man's? This phrase alone is so prevalent that it now jerks me out of the story and that alone means I will stop buying her books. Also talk to a gay man about the mechanics of gay sex.

Authors who get a lot of praise from their groupies seem to get lazy and JL is very lazy here. Maybe she needs some new beta readers or a different editor. I have come to the conclusion that the people passing themselves off as editors never got greater than a C in English class.
