Présentation de l'éditeur

In a woodland garden everything grows together in a way that is very similar to a natural woodland but with the trees and shrubs all bearing edible crops, and with many different edible herbs and vegetables growing under them. Instead of battling against nature, this is a garden that works in harmony with it. It is possible to plan out a woodland garden in a space as small as a backyard or as large as a few acres, using the guidelines that nature has shown us, but using species that can provide us with fruits, seeds, leaves, roots and flowers that are delicious and highly nutritious. When well designed, such a system can: »» be far more productive than a field of annuals »» produce a much wider range of foods »» require far less work »» require far less inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides »» provide valuable habitats for wildlife »» be very pleasing aesthetically. It all comes down to selecting the right mixture of species. There are over 5,000 species of edible plants that can be grown outdoors in temperate climates and about 2,100 of these can be grown in a woodland so there really is no lack of variety to choose from.

Biographie de l'auteur

Plants For A Future (PFAF) is a charity providing a resource and information centre for edible and otherwise useful plants. The main aims of the charity are researching and providing information on ecologically sustainable horticulture, promoting a high diversity, holistic and permacultural approach namely 'woodland gardening'. The aim is to use a minimal input of resources and energy, create a harmonious eco-system and cause the least possible damage to the environment whilst achieving high productivity. Plants For A Future develop and administer the online pfaf.org edible and medicinal plant database which includes information on approximately 7,000 useful plants. Plants For A Future believe plants can provide people with the majority of their needs, in a way that cares for the planet's health. A wide range of plants can be grown to produce all our food needs and many other commodities, whilst also providing a diversity of habitats for our native flora and fauna.

Good but limited 1 décembre 2013

I almost gave this book three stars. But doing so wouldn't be fair the work the authors put into it. It is a nice list of plants for a British climate. What I needed, however, was help designing a gardening for a American zone 3-4 garden. Despite the book's subtitle, the book is not about garden design, it's about garden plants. It notes which plants are hardy enough to take a -15C/5F winter. I need to know if a plant will be damaged by a -30F winter, and I can't get that information from this book. If you are in a more temperate region, already have a garden design and are looking to put some new and different perennials in, this is your book. The Plants for a Future folks are the best when it comes to that kind of information. But if you want help figuring out what to plant where in a northern North American garden, you'll find it less useful.

Good reference book 19 décembre 2013

It's attractive and accessible, with a huge amount of sometimes surprising information on edible plant, shrub, and tree products. It's written in England, so their coldest hardiness rating may not always be hardy in the northern US states, but that's easily checkable once you have the information they've assembled. Our common names aren't always included, but since the Latin names are, they can be found. I will reread and use this book a lot.

Logically grouped information, with lots of details and an easy to read quick summary for each plant presented. Many color drawings. Can be read as a "dream book", for planning, or quick reference. Be sure to check out their website too.
