I am a product of that old British `Sec Mod' educational system which provided no formal qualifications whatsoever - not even a certificate of education. Consequently, when (many years later) I sat down to write my first book - people laughed. I was serving in the army at the time and writing about a subject (scuba diving) in which I was very proficient, highly qualified and widely experienced and one senior officer actually said to me "By what right do you seek to write a book about Scuba Diving?" Now, thirty years on, I was recently described as and award-winning, best-selling author.

YOU can do the same if YOUR drive to write is strong enough and, if it is, you should read all the reviews for this work (good and bad!) and then ask yourself this single question: `Can I afford to be without a copy of this book?'

Aimed primarily at the UK market, this work is not just a collection of addresses for various book publishers and magazine editors. Instead, it contains almost everything you might need to know when contemplating writing for the very different categories of; Newspapers, Magazines, Books, Poetry, TV, Film, Radio, Theatre et al. The advice given and lists of outlets in each of those areas is then followed by sections on; Literary Agents, Art & Illustration, Societies, Prizes and Festivals, Online, Resources, Copyright & Libel and Finance. Altogether, the wide ranging degree of helpful advice covers almost every element of the publishing world.

Certainly, if you already have a copy of last year's edition you will find few changes but consider this; The publisher contacts each contributor ever year in a bid to ascertain the most up-to-date information for inclusion and every year several of these fail to update their own particular entry.

Certainly, if you already have a copy of last year's edition you will find few changes but consider this; The publisher contacts each contributor ever year in a bid to ascertain the most up-to-date information for inclusion and every year several of these fail to update their own particular entry. The book is not, therefore, perfect but it is the best there is - by far.

Leaving aside those lists of potential outlets for your work, there are many lessons to be learned from within. If like me, for example, you write books aimed at the scuba diver, there is no point in submitting your work to a publisher who concentrates solely on, say, religious architecture (or whatever). Having identified their specific market, the writer must also learn how to present a manuscript (A4 paper, double spaced typing with a 3 mm margin all round). In other words, that prospective publisher is saying; "Do it my way and I may get around to reading it but, irritate me, and I can't be bothered!"

Nobody in the world knows all there is to know about the complicated subject of publishing. This book, however, will give the writer - most especially the aspiring writer (and artist!), the widest possible appreciation of what is involved and had I been in possession of a copy - 30 years ago!, my own particular journey would have been so much smoother!

Now consider this review alongside all those others - and ASK yourself that question!

And good luck.

A good overview but doesn't necessarily cover enough outlets to contact. Will use some of information in next month or so and then decide if it has been worthwhile. However, would NOT have this information if I didn't buy the book and some of the tips are handy.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 How to get your book published using a literary agent 31 mars 2014

If you're like most people, it seems that one of the most common dreams is to write a book. Many of us, most of us, never get around to it.

I have read and reviewed books by many first time writers, some of them have agents and some of them self publish, and know a few writers.

Being discovered by a big publisher is not that likely, as the bigger publishers will only accept submissions through a literary agent.

So how do you find the right literary agent, one who can recognize the opportunity you present, and then sell that opportunity, and most of all what do you have do to present yourself effectively, without making one of those boo boos, that could be accidentally self excluding.

A well known literary agent not looking for further submissions recommended this book to me, which is a how to in terms of how to find a literary agent, and a who's who in terms of locating who may be the correct one for you. As I live in the USA I am not necessarily looking for a UK literary agent, although in these times location is not a bar to get published.

I find this book to be an excellent resource, and at almost 800 pages in addition to literary agents contains brilliant articles, some by quite well known authors, and some very well written. I was particularly impressed by the linguistic brilliance an article written by a satirical writer, and made a mental note to read some of her books. Some of these articles are contained on single pages, and some are mini chapters. All in all you can seek and drop into what is germane to you in a particular moment, and it's also easy to find precisely what you are looking for.

I liked J.K Rowling's short piece about how she borrowed this book from a library, and used it as a resource to find a literary agent and get published, and 450 million books later she is still going strong, and writing bestsellers under assumed names, showing there is life after Harry Potter.

Most importantly I discovered ample resources about presenting your work to a literary agent.

I decided to get the 2013 version, because it's only a year older yet significantly cheaper, and likely to be sufficiently up to date for my purpose.

I wondered it there was a similar American resource, and so I bought 2014 Guide to Literary Agents. If you're wondering which of these two books to get I would recommend that one more highly, because it seems to me to be more on point about the process and sequentially deals with every step of the process such as query letters. One key take away for me was to have your book written before you ever approach a literary agent.

If you are based in the UK though you will definitely need this book.

If you are serious about getting published you will probably want to read more than one book about negotiating the publishing labyrinth and I can highly recommend this one.

I hope this was helpful, and I think you will find the book useful.
