Absolutely terrible in every way. The production values of this DVD are simply, mindbogglingly awful. Hilariously, the most famous "thing" about Holmes is discussed, sometimes with censored "bleeps" for the slang terms of the appendage and, for a film about a man who made his living in sex with the "bleep" that made him famous is never shown - rather censored by black or gray boxes around the offending member. Kinda funny actually, when in this day with full and casual nudity on HBO, Showtime, et al., a film about a porn star and the sex industry is handled with the opposite of prurience. There is nothing sexy here.
Interviews with those who knew Holmes, including ex-wives and girlfriends, managers, friends and a younger brother shed little light and alternately range from what a great guy he was to the biggest liar in the world. Generic.
The worst thing about this "documentary" is the annoying clinical narration by a British-voiced woman who sounds like she failed an audition for "Closed Case Files" on A&E. She seems to revel in her controlled mock-horror in the section regarding the infamous Wonderland murders, but never rises above the level of bland.
The whole dreadful affair is remarkably, dreadfully, stultifyingly, mind numbingly, greviously, appallingly bad. Bad bad bad. Really.

a brief look into the life of John Holmes29 juillet 2005

XXXL: The John Holmes Story If you ask your parents who John Holmes is, I imagine they'll blush a little bit and they'll tell you, he was an actor from the 70's and 80's. Well, what kind of an actor you might ask? John Holmes was a male porn star with a 14 inch penis, that's who John Holmes is. This movie is basically a documentary, with interviews from porn stars, ex wives, old girlfriends and friends of the late John Holmes who tell the story of his life and what it was like knowing him. Most of the time it's people talking about his huge penis, his compulsive lying and how charming he was. I found the documentary was very interesting, but it was too short and I feel they could have gone into greater detail about his life and how he got started in the porn business, but I'm not the film maker, am I? We do get a good look into the life of John Holmes, his rise to fame, how he slept with over 14,000 women, then finally his drug addiction, a life of murder and his passing, as he died of AIDS in 1988. If you're interested in John Holmes, I would recommend picking this up, as it's about the only movie I found about his life, but if you're just looking to pass the time, I'd try Boogie Nights which has a character based on John Holmes.
