From School Library Journal
Gr 4-6--Two titles based on the "Portrait of America" television series. An introduction summarizes the "vital character" of each state. In New York, the theme reflects the motto Excelsior, "Ever higher," while in Pennsylvania a "spirit of tolerance, community and creativity" is the focus. Written in a clear and engaging style, the texts are divided into four sections: history, economy, culture, and the future. The layout is attractive with full-color photographs and/or reproductions on every page. Following each general section, one or two special people/places/events are highlighted. Each book concludes with a time line; an almanac of key facts; pictures of the state flag, seal, bird, and flower; and a one-page index. While these books are interesting reads, report writers will want to consult the "America the Beautiful" series (Childrens) or the "Hello, USA" series (Lerner), both of which give more information and offer different types of maps. Supplemental purchases.
