Wow -- something truly new!!! 3 décembre 2013

Great first work. This is not a book that one skims -- it engages the reader's intellect and demands attention. How refreshing! The writing is direct and detailed; perhaps a little Hemingway-esque, and certainly a joy to read.

The stories are a whirlwind tour of UTD/SEAL training and combat in Vietnam and other exciting tales of sailing. The reader is left wanting to find another story to follow the one they just completed. I'd love to read a novel set in the same world of UTD and the war. Absolutely fascinating!

Great book, got this as a gift. The author uniquely and insightfully conveys a deep love and respect for the sea, the US Navy, and it's serving men and woman. Coming from a naval family, but not having served myself, many of the stories were poignant reminders of all those who serve have done for us. That and it was a great read. Highly recommend it.

I enjoyed reading the four stories in the section called "Running in Deep Sand" about UDT and the Vietnam war. This is well written fiction, mainly founded on true facts and the stories remind me of the way it was, as I remember it. The author and I were in Underwater Demolition Team Training class 33 (BUDS ) in Coronado and attended Army jump school at Fort Benning together. Readers interested in good short stories will enjoy this collection.

Not your typical frogman book 3 janvier 2014

Gil Mackin is an intelligent, thoughtful and sensitive writer, and draws upon his full life as a frogman, sailor, student of Philosophy and science and stock trader. I particularly enjoyed his poetry and hope he continues to hone his craft and produce more engaging stories and poems.

"...the bayonet blade of a stainless steel moon..." 7 décembre 2013

Just could not put down this book. Each 'fictional' story has the unmistakable ring of cold hard truth. I found myself drift off into thought about each situation, thinking - what would I have done with that?

As an active duty Naval Aviator, I found this collection of short stories about UDT, BUDS, Vietnam, Night Ops and more to give invaluable insight into those troops on the ground I've supported - but more than anything, the stories grabbed me and took me to places I've never been.

There are many books about UDT and SEALs on the market out there, but none reach into the depths of the soul quite like this book. The language is poetic yet concise - "a gull with an empty gut squawks with unending hunger in the darkness..."

No holds barred, nail-biters abound, leaving you wishing for the 'Hollywood' ending, but knowing that can't happen. This isn't Disney folks. GREAT READ!
