The not-quite-teen set will delight in the Feegles’ spicy, irreverent dialogue and Tiffany’s salty determination. Grade 5-7-Tiffany, an extremely competent nine-year-old, takes care of her irritating brother, makes good cheese on her father's farm, and knows how to keep secrets. When monsters from Fairyland invade her world and her brother disappears, Tiffany, armed only with her courage, clear-sightedness, a manual of sheep diseases, and an iron frying pan, goes off to find him. Her search leads her to a showdown with the Fairy Queen. It is clear from the beginning that Tiffany is a witch, and a mighty powerful one. The book is full of witty dialogue and a wacky cast of characters, including a toad (formerly a lawyer). Much of the humor is supplied by the alcohol-swilling, sheep-stealing pictsies, the Wee Free Men of the title, who are six-inches high and speak in a broad Scottish brogue. (The fact that readers will not understand some of the dialect won't matter, as Tiffany doesn't understand either, and it is all part of the joke.) These terrors of the fairy world are Tiffany's allies, and she becomes their temporary leader as they help her search for the Fairy Queen. Once the story moves into Fairyland it becomes more complex, with different levels of dream states (or, rather, nightmares) and reality interweaving. Tiffany's witchcraft eschews the flamboyant tricks of wizards; it is quiet, inconspicuous magic, grounded in the earth and tempered with compassion, wisdom, and justice for common folk. Not as outrageous and perhaps not as inventive as The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents (HarperCollins, 2001), The Wee Free Men has a deeper, more human interest and is likely to have wider appeal. All in all, this is a funny and thought-provoking fantasy, with powerfully visual scenes and characters that remain with readers. A glorious read.

This is the story of Tiffany Aching, a 9-year-old farmers' daughter, living in a green, hilly, full-of-sheep countryside named the Chalk (DW). One day when she's walking by the river with her capricious baby brother Wentworth, she's attacked by Jenny Green-Teeth, a monster with long teeth and eyes as wide as eight-inch soup plates. Nightmares are invading the land.

Not long after, Wentworth is kidnapped by the Queen of FairyLand. Following the advice of Miss Tick, a witch she met at the village fair, and her talking toad, and with the help of the Nac Mac Feegles, the blue-skinned little pictsies with the strong Scottish accent, she arms herself with a frying pan and her Granny's book on Diseases of the Sheep, and sets off in searched of her brother.

Beside being extremely funny and packed with action, The Wee Free Men is also a really sweet book, full of Tiffany's fond memories of Granny Aching, who was a famous shepherd of the Chalk, and a kind of witch in her own way. It's a story both for adults and children, telling you to look at the World around you, and teaching you, in a light way, the respect of Nature or other moral values. This might well be my favourite Discworld book, I absolutely loved it!

Voici donc le deuxième ouvrage pour jeunes lecteurs (après The Amazing Maurice...) à s'inscrire dans le célèbre cycle des Annales du Disque Monde de Terry Pratchett.
Le livre précédent, histoire de rats intelligents avait atteint les sommets de qualités appréciables auxquels Pratchett a habitué ses lecteurs. Mais on l'attendait un peu au coin du bois pour cet opus-ci.
Et bien le pari semble réussi. Le lecteur fidèle des Annales aura le plaisir de retrouver des personnages déjà croisés dans les volumes "officiels" de la série ainsi que la verve satyrique et le sens aiguë du pastiche de Terry Pratchett. Inutile de raconter l'histoire, comme toujours chez l'auteur, elle se déroule peu à peu, prenant le lecteur par la main pour l'amener en des contrées bien étranges et pourtant si famillières. PLus court que ses homologues, ce livre se déguste patiemment et avec plaisir. On sent un réel attachement de l'auteur à l'univers si longuement élaboré. A un point ou le lecteur se sent de connivence. Seul petit détail, les Wee Free Men du titre parlent avec un accent assez terrible et leurs propos sont parfois bien sybillins pour le lecteur français. Mais il n'y a rien qu'une lecture attentive (et un bon dictionnaire) ne puisse résoudre. Bref, un bon moment de plaisir, une histoire drôle et tendre et un nouveau succès pour Terry Pratchett. Ce monsieur doit être un peu sorcier.
