"Dark Shadows" by Jana Petken is an emotional thrill ride. It starts off in the depths of woe, and keeps you glued to your seat wondering just what will happen to poor Mercy next. The book opens on the day Mercy is born. *SPOILER* Her mother dies in child birth, and her father -- stricken with woe -- commits suicide. After a vicar recommends the baby be sent to an orphanage, Mercy's grandparents decide instead to raise her themselves -- naming her after her mother's last words, a cry to God for mercy. If that isn't an emotionally walloping way to start a story, I don't know what is. And the best part is that Ms. Petken's highly descriptive writing pulls you into the world of the story and doesn't let go. It's like you can see every face, every dingy street corner and shack and pub and brothel and ship.

From her mournful beginnings, Mercy's story only gets more and more evocative and tragic, with a few precious silver linings of joy. After her grandparents try to pimp her off to a grocer, Mercy moves from the streets of London to the battlefields of Virginia. Finding love amidst war and immeasurable tragedy, Ms. Petken immerses us in the life Mercy builds for herself as a gun-toting heroine and a romantic lover.

Madame du Pont, also known as Mrs. Mallory, a brothel owner, was one of the most fascinating characters for me -- because, while brothel owners are a typical trope in these types of stories, Madame du Pont is far from your usual brothel owner. Through her Mercy learns much more than you'd ever expect.

This is sweeping, epic storytelling at its best. If you like historical fiction, if you like romance, you won't be disappointed with "Dark Shadows."

Wow! I didn't know what kind of story I was getting myself into, but it didn't matter, because Mr. Legg grabbed me by the throat and kept the pace going full throttle until the end! When the story starts, it feels like INDIANA JONES or the NATIONAL TREASURE movie, involving archaeology, conspiracy, religion, suspense, action and more. But as the story starts to unfold and you learn more about Rip Gaines' "Cosega Theory," you realize there's a lot more going on. I'm a fan of the TV show "Ancient Aliens" because I like exploring alternative theories about mankind's history and origins, and what's cool is that Mr. Legg presents a unique take on the "our history is not what it seems" trope and turns it into a compelling thriller infused with an intriguing scifi mystery. As soon as the tale started, I wished I could have Googled Rip Gaines' "Cosega Theory" to find out all its details. But alas, it's fiction, so I had to keep flipping pages at a furious rate to learn as much as I could about the unique hypothesis. But I'm left wanting more! I could watch a dozen movies on this theory. I would definitely have read even a nonfiction book about this topic, because it's so damn intriguing. But Mr. Legg has given us the best of both worlds: A super-compelling mystery built around this crazy theory, combined with an edge-of-your-seat suspense-thriller. I'm hooked. Book 2: Here I come!!

This is a great little collection of fairy tales, especially for the price. The annotations are very helpful, and the illustrations are beautiful. I'd recommend this one for older kids, and "adult kids". You'll find interesting versions of all the classics here. Some of them have been adapted and Disney-fied so many times that you may not recognize the original classic versions -- which is reason enough to pick this one up!

This story is about how two men pull one another out of the slump or depression that the modern world has brought to many. The backdrop of the story is scary as hell, as religious fundamentalists have seized power and, for non-believers, nowhere is safe. A great take on a real potential problem.

Extremely helpful guidebook to self-publishing. This book has everything you need to know to start your own self-publishing empire -- from writing, to publishing, to marketing. Yes, marketing. You know, that one teeny tiny thing that most authors forget about or feign ignorance of. If you're like me, then that marketing step won't come naturally to you -- unless you check out this book! Highly recommended!

A fun story with gags scattered throughout. The characters are extreme as the title suggests but it really works well as a fun light read. I noticed a couple of typos but nothing to get upset about. Well worth a read.

This was a refreshing and humorous take on death, life, and everything in between. Peter John deftly balances the black comedic tone, which is one of the most difficult to manage. Bravo on a superior story that will keep you chuckling throughout!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A perfect piece of airport fiction!, 22 octobre 2013
This is a really exciting piece of military literature! If you're looking for a perfect piece of can't-put-it-down airport fiction, then definitely read "The Ian Fleming Files: Operation Armada." The pristine visuals, the thoroughly researched technology and people and places, the easy one-liners, and the action-adventure tone make it feel like -- you guessed it -- a great James Bond movie. Which is no surprise, considering Ian Fleming based his James Bond character on his own exploits with Naval Intelligence. The best part is, reading this, you can't help but wonder whether it's fact or fiction. I kept running off to Wikipedia to research little details that cropped up here and there in the story.

If you're a fan of James Bond and the novels of Clive Cussler, you will read this book in one sitting!

This is a very nice little slice-of-life about a family suddenly turned on its head by a series of revelations. There's some great comedy in the story, mostly due to several off-the-rails characters who are overly medicated, and some heartfelt drama as well. Fun little tale!

Ce commentaire fait référence à cette édition : Solstice (English Edition) (Format Kindle)
"Solstice" is sort of an unusual book. I've never read anything quite like it. It starts off in a psychiatric hospital, then goes to a roadside motel, and then to this -- I-don't-know-what-to-call-it -- WEIRD community in northern Oklahoma. There are a lot of twists and turns that are organic enough, growing in cool ways from what came before. I wanted to see more of the locals and the Rainbow cult, though. Also, I didn't really get Clive Cole's whole backstory. But the pacing was great. I was never bored, and like I said, the plot twists worked well.

"Solstice" is a tight read with very few wasted words. If this is Book #1 in a series, I'm lookin' forward to Book #2!!
