It is the Smiley before he became the master spy catcher we know. It is, nevertheless an entertaining yarn with plenty of action.

I rarely read book in one go. Even more rarely do I read a book of which I have seen the film version. Yet, I would read this book again gladly and I would probably do it in one go again. The dialog is superb. A lesson on how it should be written to anyone that fancies himself a writer. It is also a moral led on. As Hemingway noted, the world breaks us all and in the case of people involved in the spy game, it is even more so. We live under governments that chest, lie, steal from us, and have little respect for human life and this novel shows the worst of our governments servants. This, not Great Expectations, should be required reading in our schools.

The stories are well written, there is no doubt of that, yet they lack a bit of the clever intertwining of several disparate elements one has come to expect of his writing. nevertheless, interesting.

The way Julian Barns can weave together seemingly disparate characters, tales, and circumstances still greatly pleases even after having read several of his books. And this one is especially we'll done as well as moving. It is like a friend sharing with us his grief in the understanding that we have also suffered similarly.

An entertaining distillation of all the triviality and social banality that is our modern society. I like the chapter with all the PowerPoint-like slides, but I don't see why it had to be written like that.

This is scary, not only because of the story, but because of the power of the writer. Lots of thriller writers and screenplay amateurs would benefit by reading this book a couple of times.

If you want to know "what he was like" during his early life and his later time as a famous painter and political person, this is a good start. But, this is not a work for someone who wants a an essay of criticism of his work as a painter. This is best left for books like those of Favela.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Again the themes that Julian Barnes has explored so thoroughly, 30 mars 2013

Staring at the sun as a metaphor for looking into the face of God? Again, this novel is a subtle exploration of the things Julian Barnes has so entertainingly explored in other of his works: the meaning of religion, belief, history, the certainty of our past, the past or others, our memory and the certainty of what we remember or thing we remember. En fin, so many sub-texts.

This is a very interesting "novel". I suggest one read (before or after) an essay on the themes Barnes explores in this entertaining way: religion, history, the meaning of remembering the past and how sure "things happened as we think, imagine, are told they happened, and many other interesting questions not always answered.
