5.0 étoiles sur 5 The most entertaining of Dickens' novels, 3 mai 2016

There is not much to add to the tons of commentary that has been written about this novel. It must rank among the best of comic writing ever written. I have read it many times and I bought his copy just so I could follow the Audible version I have of it.

The Manual of Detection

This novels take on the post-modernist style is beginning to feel a bit dated, as if the author wanted to imitated Conan Doyle but was afraid to be too much like that author. It is entertaining, though somewhat self conscious of it.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A very entertaining biography, 3 mai 2016

This is not the usual dry stating of facts and research. It reads more like a novel or perhaps one of those entertaining BBC documentaries (which it has been turned into, according to the blurb on the front cover).

If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things
If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Speaking of a remarkable book about things, 17 février 2016

It is an unusual form, and one in which one has to be very attentive if you want to find a story within the lines that seem like prose poetry. But interesting in the way the words slowly accumulate to create an atmosphere, a picture of a time and place, and of the myriad of characters wandering about in them.

If you are a fan of the novel, of Virginia Woolf, or of great writing, you can't get a better tome than this. It is my reference tool for her writing.

Marcel Proust's Search for Lost Time: A Reader's Guide to The Remembrance of Things Past

Edition : Broché
Prix : EUR 15,14

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good guide to the original, 3 décembre 2015
Achat vérifié(De quoi s'agit-il ?)
A good guide if you are starting out in the adventure of reading the original, or a great resume to remind you what the original is all about. Also a good who's who of the many characters.

The Occupation Trilogy: La Place de l'Étoile - The Night Watch - Ring Roads
The Occupation Trilogy: La Place de l'Étoile - The Night Watch - Ring Roads
Prix : EUR 9,21

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Excelente early Modiano, 1 novembre 2015
Achat vérifié(De quoi s'agit-il ?)
The trilogy, which reads like a book in three parts, sets the style and theme of remembrance and loss that permeates the rest of Modiano's work. The characters seem to drift from book to book as they do from time period to time period. Entertaining, although at time disturbing, novels by the then "angry young man" of letters.

Collected Stories

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A pretty even collection from the master, 25 septembre 2015

What more can one say about master Salter. This is a pretty even collection of Salter's short stories. There are jewels such as Dusk as well as lesser known works, all in the understated, exact prose he was famous for.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Interesting take on Proust, 25 septembre 2015

There are plenty of interesting bits regarding Proust himself as well as his work in this book. I find the title a bit too ambitious but the contents of the work can help one understand Proust's work and how it might relate to our everyday life.

The Sense of an Ending

Julian Barns has a penchant for picking the right form for the content of a novel. But, whatever the form, it is usually very "visual", it's as if he were writing a treatment for a film. One could easily make a documentary about Flaubert from "Flaubert's Parrot" or an episodic Italian-style film of "Levels of Life". I can see this beautiful novel turned into a film that is narrated by a Jeremy Irons or Ralph Fiennes, with the sort of cold, detached manner they so easily convey, The story is interesting but what makes it more so is the form. Robert Frost was right: the form is the message. As with all great novels, there is so much more being "said" in the subtext that one is obliged to read the novel more than once.
