The vampires in this story are certainly not nice... they love violence and they see humans as food and entertainment.
This is no paranormal romance... it's bloody, dark, gory... these vampires are true predators with no mercy for their prey.

Loki and Tyr are the original blood blothers, they were brothers before they were turned about a 1000 years ago. And in the Wild West they met Thor (who was called Michael then), which became the third blood brother.
The flasbacks of the blood brothers's past are great.

I really liked the story itself and that did deserve 4 stars but the writing is a bit chaotic (especially the jumps from past to present were confusing sometimes) and that's why I only give it a 3.

The story begins within a lab in Alcatraz...
A scientific project that has taken years can finally be tested but it goes horribly wrong and their experiment creates a portal to another world, a world full of monsters such as dragons, werewolves, vampires, medusas... and these monsters can't wait to cross through these portals and prey on the defenceless humans.

A few decades later the world is nothing like it once was, millions of people have died and technology can't be used because it attracts the anomaly that creates portals.
Humans now live in a few walled cities and monsters roam the rest of the world.

Leah and her 6 friends, called the Miracles, receive a message from the other world... they have to go back to Alcatraz in order to save their planet... but it's a very dangerous journey!

I loved this book! It's a mix of YA dystopian and supernatural with lot's of suspence. The charachters are wonderful, especially Leah and Kai!
Although this story is a standalone I do hope Scott will someday write a sequel because I would love to see what happens with everyone in the book.

Normally I don't judge a book by its cover, I choose the books I read by reading the description and good and bad reviews. But once in a while there are covers that really put me off and I don't add the book to my TBR list even though the description sounds realy good.
It's only because I've already read books by Scott Prussing and know how talented an indy author he is that I gave this book a go. And I'm really glad I did!
So if like me, the cover makes you have doubts about reading it, ignore the cover and just read the book. You won't regret it!

Note from July 26, 2014: The comments about the cover are about the first cover of this kindle edition (which you can't see anymore on Amazon). Since I read the book the cover has been changed which I think suits the book much more.

I'm usually not a big fan of short stories not related to series, but I loved this collection of shorts!

The Blanket is a very short but very sad story of a little boy named Milo.

The Scavengers was my favorite story in this collection! I fell in love with Patsy and Hank! Who would've thought 2 zombies could be so adorable!

The Building... Letty is a 16-year-old girl who was seperated from her mom during the zombie outbreak and she wants nothing more than rejoing her mom.
Loved the story but the ending was so very sad!

The Necromancer is about Aura, a 14-year-old girl living in the Bridgetown Settlement. Although I had a feeling Aura was "one of them" from the start, the ending took me by complete surprise.

The Race is about Laurie and some of her college friends trying to survive. This had a great, very ironic ending!

The False Start... loved that story! I didn't realise till the end of the story that Jamie was "the Jamie", as in Josh's dad from Rhiannon Frater's The Living Dead Boy and we also got a glimpse of Bonnie, the dog, from Stop Requested (a short story at the end of The Living Dead Boy book).

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good story but editing could be better, 17 juin 2014

I loved the story but the writing was chaotic and the story didn't flow so well as in the first Hellhound book. I had to re-read quite a few bits because it didn't make sense the first time I read it.
The many typos also distracted me from the story.

All in all it is a good story even if the editing could've been better and I liked it enough to read the next book in the series because I want to know what happens to Halo, Gunner and the rest of the charachters.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Amazing book!!!, 16 juin 2014
This book was amazing!

Zombie books are not my usual genre, I read PNR and UF. But after reading Rhiannon Frater's Pretty When She Dies trilogy (UF with vamps) I just had to try some other books by this author because I love her writing style and the wonderful characters she creates.

So I tried her As the World Dies trilogy and was crazy about it, and now I finished this standalone zombie novel.

The Last Bastion of the Living was brilliant! Fab story, amazing charachters, wonderful writing... there's action, friendship, joy and sadness, love, deceit... This book made me laugh and cry and Maria, Dwayne and the rest of their crew have a permenant place in my heart.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Total ripoff!, 20 mai 2014
This book is a total ripoff and I would've given it 0 stars if I could!

It thought it would have a proper epilogue about Sookie and some of the other main charachters like Erik, Pam, Alcide, Bill... instead of a proper little stories we get some cold facts about their future lives and about the lives of every miner charachter who has ever appeared in the series.

I didn't remember about a third of them and really didn't care what happened to them. And even those I did remember didn't interest me... who cares how Jane Bodhouse died and that her son never got married!

I wanted a story about the more important charachters, not some stupid fluff to fill yet another book to make money!
Charlaine Harris wrote After Dead cause fans asked for it, well this fan didn't ask for useless facts about a whole bunch of miner charachters!
The Sookie Stackhouse series will always have a special place in my heart (because of the first 9 to 10 books, not the last ones) because this series made me discover PNR and UF.
But I'll never read another book by Charlaine Harris again!

The 2 previous books in this trilogy are amazing but Siege... I don't have the right words to say how good it was!
Words like fenomenal, brilliant, wonderful come close but still can't express how much I loved it...

It was also an emotional rollercoaster with moments of intense joy but also of incredible, heart-breaking sadness. Somewhere halfway the book I was crying so hard I had to put the book down for a bit to process what happened.

This is my first zombie series, I usually read PNR and UF but I decided to try this series because I loved Frater's Pretty When She Dies trilogy so much that I wanted to read more from this author.
And I'm so glad I did!

Waw, loved it even more than The First Days!
The story in "The Fort", as the survivors call their little enclave, continues and now it's not only the zombies threatening their survival but also a gang of cruel, nasty bandits.

Life goes on for our survivors... new friendships and relationships are formed in the fort and everyone tries to prepare as best as they can for what may happen.
And horrible things do happen in this world... the story kept me on the edge of my seat more than once (well, figuratively speaking cause I read in bed).

I can't wait to see what happens in Siege!

This book is amazeballs!

It's the zombie apocalypse and 2 girls, Jenni and Katie, end up traveling together in search of a safe place.
Those 2 girls form an intense friendship from the start and get through all the horrors together, having each others back.

I can't wait to see what happens next to Jenni, Katie and their entourage in their (hopefully) safe enclave!

I loved The Living Dead Boy! I thought it might be too "young" for me because because the story is centered around pre-teens and I'm in my forties, but I loved it.

The Living Dead Boy is very different from Frater's Pretty When She Dies Trilogy I read a few weeks ago, but as brilliantly written.
I was worrying about thoses kids throughout the book... I was scared with them, cried with them... I felt like I was in that tree house with them, trying to keep safe from the zombies.

There was a little bonus story at the end, Stop Requested, it was ubercute! It was about Rachel and Bonnie, a pair we meet at the end of The Living Dead Boy. Rachel is a blind university student and Bonnie is her beloved guide dog. What made this story so cute is that the story is told in the guide dog's POV and how she safes her beloved owner from being taken by the zombies.
