Splendid book, very well exposed problem of state sponsored killing. Interesting, spirited, civil minded, exciting. Grisham can write. It's not War and Peace but it doesn't pretend to be.

After having read the first book of the trilogy, the splendid story of Old Filth, I just felt I want more.....so this book. The story from the point of view of Betty, Old Filth's wife. Perhaps a little too schematic , a little "bare boned" in the beginning but getting better and better from the middle on. The world of the Raj generation. Beautifully recreated, strange and at the same time familiar as the story of Betty's marriage and her long secret love for another man unfurls. I loved the way old age and nearing death is described without unnecessary sentimentality, just part of life.

I loved this book. The story of this deeply stricken child who developes into an imperfect , wounded man whos love for, and sesitivity to beauty partly saves. The language is rich, baroque, evocative. Loved/
admired/ was sucked into the long descriptions of torment and anguish barely eased by drugs. And yes, if you hate drugs and see no way to understand the attraction, the need for it, you better not read this book. It is not for the morally severe. I think the book makes an interesting and valid case for "eternal" works of art even if , as the author makes it clear, the connexion between their individual beauty and attraction can not be but personal.

It is a well written, exciting,if simple, story about abuse and sequelae of coming within a hairsbreadth of dying. Also about how one can rebuild herself after such a catastrophic episode in one's life. Psychologically very right.

A very good and clever point is being made about silence and memory. An engrossing story, at least for women readers as the story tilts on the side of the woman. A variation on the old story of the woman scorned...there is slowly an emerging feeling that both the man and the woman share in the responsibility for how things develop. The argument is sophisticated and eye -openers are coming one after an other, in small doses to the very end. The end makes sense or at least gives satisfaction and is coherent with the story...
