Recipes for 175 traditional American cookies (peanut butter, oatmeal, chocolate chip, etc.), bars (brownies, blondies, lemkn squares, etc.), as well as some international cookies (tuiles, biscochitos, pfeffernüssen, etc.). Beautifully photographed and categorized by crispy, soft, light, crumbly, chunky, cakey, crisp, rich. That said, the book does not always stay open so when I want to bake I either weigh the pages down with something to keep them open or consult marthastewart.com on my mobile phone. Nearly all the recipes in the book (and many others) are already found on her site and I find it easier to view the recipes there on a tablet or mobile than in the book.

A very good springform pan that is easy to use. I use it to make both American cheesecake and butter cakes. When making butter cakes I line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper to avoid leaks. When baking cheesecake with cookie crust base in bain marie I place the pan within a 9 inch cake pan to avoid water getting into the crust. Only drawback to this pan: the anti adhesive gets scratched if care is not taken.

One of my son's favorite books. Includes names for dinosaurs, which are grouped together for better understanding (i.e., sea reptiles, flying dinosaurs, etc.). Pages are sturdy so I don't worry when he takes the book with him to preschool. Highly recommended to introduce your child to the world of dinosaurs.

The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two

First off, let me say that I am the mother of two boys; the difference in age between them is eleven years.

For the birth of my first son I read books by Heidi Murkoff ("What to Expect When You're Expecting", etc.). In addition to the helpful information given, I utilized the form of parenting taught in my family. Basically, as soon as baby is brought home from hospital baby sleeps in a crib in his own room, holding the baby is kept to a minimum in order to avoid "spoiling" (term used in my family), baby's meals are kept to a schedule, baby is usually pushed in a stroller, baby is placed in a baby seat or playpen most of the time, etc. I did change a few things not usually done by the older generations in my family, such as breastfeeding and occasionally "wearing" my baby in a baby carrier. My first son was an incredibly mellow and calm baby who never fussed. The bond between us is strong, but I feel that his development would have benefited even more if I had used a more "attached" form of parenting.

For my second child, who is a "high-needs" child due to a somewhat stressful pregnancy and birth, I am using a more attached form of parenting and purchased "The Baby Book" because I knew that the form of parenting advocated by the authors (Dr. Sears, a pediatrician and his nurse/wife, themselves parents of 8 children, at least three of whom are medical doctors specializing in pediatrics themselves) was geared to this form of parenting. The authors greatly emphasize practices such as prolonged breastfeeding, co-sleeping, "baby-wearing" and playing with baby from birth. They also encourage at least one parent to stay home to raise baby. (That said, they do not "put down" any parents who choose to place their child in daycare, and do address issues for parents who do so within the book.) While I do follow most of the parenting aspects encouraged by the authors, such as staying at home with my baby, breastfeeding on cue, "baby-wearing", napping with baby, playing with baby often, keeping television off, etc. I also choose to do things not necessarily encouraged by the authors, such as pushing my child in a stroller, using an ergonomic baby carrier instead of a sling (although I used a sling during the first three months) and giving baby a pacifier. Similarly, I do not co-sleep other than the occasional nap with baby. Instead, we chose to have baby sleep in a bassinet in our room for the first three months and later placed him in his own room next to ours.

In addition to the parenting aspects mentioned above, the book is full of information on baby's development and behavior for the first two years and provides lots of insight and tips on how to optimize both in order to ensure a healthy child in all respects. If one is not keen on what Dr. Sears and his wife have coined "attachment parenting", than one can simply use the book for all the other wealth of information provided on how to raise baby or do what I did: Glean from the book the practices that suited me and simply dismiss what did not. In the end, it can be used as an excellent guide and parents can use it for what they know and feel work best for their baby and lifestyle.

My 11 year old son has been reading G.S. books for years. What he didn't like about this particular book from the series (in his own words) "When you read the title of the book you think that Geronimo Stilton is going to go on a special mission and that he has special accessories but the story does not have that at all. The real story is that he meets up with an old friend and the friend is a secret agent." What he did like about it: "Geronimo Stilton finds his old friend from primary school and that old friend looks after him. But that's it." He also said that he didn't like the book as much as the other ones, but still gives it a four out of five stars because "it's a little bit emotional, that's all".

G.S. books are colorfully illustrated, very entertaining and (most importantly) will incite children to read. However, I think that my son, at his 11 years of age, has outgrown them as he now finishes a G.S. book in a day. So they are excellent books, but fitting for the age group of 7-10 as intended by the publisher.

My 11 year old son devoured this book! In his own words: "It's a very good book. I found it to be cool. It has a lot of imagination and a lot of details. It is fascinating. I like the magic in it and how they describe everything. I like how they go to different continents because it is everyone's dream to go to another continent in a second." Clearly this book was full of adventure and fantasy, and one he couldn't put down as I saw him read it for several days straight. I did read a couple of pages with him once and what I read was well written and appropriate for his age group, with sophisticated enough language for him to expand his vocabulary. Before he had even finished it he asked me to order the next book in the series, "The Magician", and as soon as he received the package in the mail he pulled the book out and immediately started reading it! [Note: My son is bilingual in French and English with slightly more inclination towards the French language when it comes to writing. So while he speaks as a native English speaker, his writing and reading comprehension is not always as strong as it is in French. However, any limitations he might have in the written English language did not affect his enjoyment of this book whatsoever, so I think that any child who is not a native English speaker but fluent in the language will like this book and strengthen English skills in the process.]

I grew up reading Dr Seuss, and I think that having started reading these books at such an early age greatly contributed to my love for reading and writing as an adult. I try to foster the same for my own children, so I begin to build the individual libraries of my two sons with books by Dr Seuss (and Eric Carle) as early as their birth.

This board book set contains "Hop on Pop", "Ten Apples Up on Top" (verse by Dr. Seuss as Theo. LeSieg with illustrations by Roy McKie), "The Shape of Me and Other Stuff" and "Oh, the Thinks You Can Think". Although meant for toddlers and preschool age children, I started reading these books aloud to my sons as infants to bond with them and to develop their receptive vocabulary. These board books are perfect examples of the rhyming phrases and short storyline to capture a very small child's attention. They are small (about 11 cm x 14.5 cm / 4" x 5.5") and sturdy, so preschool children will enjoy reading them on their own as well as with a grownup or older child.

Before purchasing this book and when my son was just a newborn I already did some of the activities suggested in it such as reading aloud, singing, rhyming, chanting, dancing, peekaboo, infant massage, looking into a mirror, having him track objects etc. but I didn't realize that *all* of these were so essential for development. Like all other parents I did these things just to bond with my baby, to entertain him or to soothe him. This book explains why these activities are important from birth and what skills they will help a child to develop. Additionally, other activities I didn't know about are suggested and described so I got a lot of new ideas to "play" with my (now) four month old baby, such as helping him roll over using a blanket and watching birds in a bird feeder. Neatly organized into age groups starting at 0 months and ending at 9 months and up, all activities are illustrated with sharp photos and contain a checklist of what skills they help babies develop, such as balance, body strength, body awareness, coordination, problem solving, etc. Sophisticated toys are not required and sometimes simple household objects are used. Words to lullabies, nursery rhymes and folk songs (although some are variations to the ones I remember learning as a child) are featured throughout the book and there are some new ones suggested to the tunes of already known songs. The book's format makes it easy to leaf through and keep open on a certain page.
