I almost gave up on this as I thought it was going to turn out to be sheer fantasy, but not at all and i'm glad I persevered. Dreadful and weird murders, police investigation with a touch of fantasy/horror.
I was a tiny bit irritated by the Detective Inspector who had a lot of inner smiles of indulgence for his inexperienced colleague, a female colleague as it happens ... but the characters are well-drawn and believable.
On the whole a good read, not a masterpiece, but a good, solid, decent book combining credible with fantasy, but not going too far with the unbelievable. That in itself is an achievement.

J'ai adoré ce livre. L'idée est géniale, l'histoire pleine d'humour, personnages bien dessinés, parfaitement crédibles, aimables. C'est un livre que j'offrirai.

Not only a cracking good story with believable characters, this is also a glimpse into the heady world of writers and writing, success and (often repeated) failure. It is at once hopeful and brutally hopeless.
It's also a very clever and entertaining exercise in writing and writing about writing and writing about writers. So many levels to appreciate it on. or not if you just want an intelligent good read.
Technique and manipulation, jealousy, pride, covetousness - possibly a metaphor for all of the seven deadlies, but that is only just occuring to me now as I think back.
A very well-constructed story, threads reaching in many directions, but always skilfully woven into the cloth of the writers' conference. I enjoyed it very much and will read more by this writer.

I gave up on this about a quarter of the way in - and that was too far and proof of my determination to give it a chance.
It's well-written, no problem with that, but it's completely superficial and expects you also to believe in the existence of fairies, ghosts and an invisible, invented, childhood friend to whom the heroine listens and talks (she's a grown woman).
The women are all tall and beautiful, those who are older are "still" beautiful, the men handsome (or "still" handsome) and distinguished. All the characters are kind, understanding, supportive, strong, there-for-each-other. Result there is no potential whatsoever for tension - apart from the heroine's having lost her true love through a misunderstanding, married the wrong man, been left a young (and beautiful) widow and feeling guilty about it.
Despite the author's attempt to make all her characters sympathetic, one is aware all the time of their wealth, privilege and exclusivity - a private island given to promoting the arts (sorry should have said the characters are all amazingly talented), stretched limos, shopping, luxury apartments etc etc
I suppose there is a readership for this kind of candy-floss chicklit de-luxe, but it annoys the hell out of me. :))

I had only just finished another book on the same theme - an America, possibly a world, post-apocalypse and had not thought that two such books would join my best-ever list.
A man and his son, we never learn their names, are following the road to reach the coast in search of something different from the cold, the dark, the ashes. they don't know what they will find.
They are in constant danger, not least from fellow-survivors, but also from illness, wounds, starvation. You ache for their safety. McCarthy's wonderful, evocative writing brings everything right home to you. You can't escape.

You have some interest in and/or knowledge of the French higher education system. Made redundant from a high-powered, well-paid job, Zuckerman decides to take the course to become an English teacher in France and finds that the French system serves mostly to inform her that she isn't well-versed enough in English to pass muster.
By turns amusing and an indictment of an out-of-touch, outdated, rather elitist and chauvinistic method of teaching English and recruiting teachers to do it.
I enjoyed the book as a whole, yet I rail against the idea that you can be an English teacher just because you speak the language . Mm-hmm.

I read this following a book I'd so thoroughly enjoyed that I was worried anything might not come up to scratch, but this surprised me by being not only very readable, but well-written and a cracking good story.

I gave up reading this book very quickly. I have had third-year pupils who wrote better English and more interesting stories. Immature, over-elaborated style. Anyone who is a discerning reader won't enjoy this - in fact might find it impossible to read as unsatisfying on too many levels.
I almost hope i'm being unfair, because perhaps there is a readership, but i'm not part of it.
I give it 2 stars, because 1 star means "I hated it" I didn't hate it, I just found it not worth reading.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Slum

Based on years of the author's working in India, this novel communicates the chaos, the noise, the despair, the hope, the resourcefulness of a struggling population, living in an endless slum right outside Mumbai airport.
It's often amusing, often breathtaking, equally often heart-rending. Vividly written, prepare to "go there", live it, feel it, when you pick up this book.
