In the long tradition of alternate history or dystopia novels (such as Huxley's BRAVE NEW WORLD, Sinclair Lewis' IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE, George Orwell's 1984 and Philip Roth's THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA), Sansom's novel describes Great Britain as having given in to appeasement in the 1930s and having made peace with Germany. Hitler is dying, the war in Russia continues, Churchill has gone underground, Beaverbrook is prime minister and Mosley is Home Secretary with his Blackshirts everywhere. Jews are rounded up to face an unknown future, violence, repression, strikes, torture abound in a London engulfed in a yellow smog.
The book is a page turner, each scene leading to another dramatic confrontation. It is completely engrossing and historically interesting since there were in Great Britain, as in France, pro-Fascist movements and members of the Government (Lord Halifax, Chamberlain) who were in favor of appeasement.
For those readers interested in history, I suggest they read the author's comments at the end of the work on the actual history of the period.
To sum up: highly recommended

This is the second book I have read recently written by a surgeon who is tackling the subject of aging and dying. These books are not depressing; on the contrary they are very humane in their approach and realistic since their comments are based on actual medical experience. The book by Doctor Gawande refers to the earlier work HOW WE DIE and discusses his own experiences with his patients and within his own family. Both surgeons agree that there comes a time when the body can no longer survive and that time should be respected by doctors. As Doctor Gawande points out modern medicine can always find a way to prolong life (and therefore the suffering of the patient) by taking away this, adding that, fixing something here, inserting something there, but is that humane? This book is of interest to all of us and in particular to people who realize that they are aging or who are having to care for elderly relatives.

Here's a good book for dog lovers and also for lovers of these English novelists and poet. Dogs played an important role in their lives, bringing joy and accompanying them everywhere. Of course there is a certain amount of repetition in each chapter but not too much. Retracing their relationship with their dogs meant following their lives, both literary and social. For readers who don't know about their lives this book gives them a good summary of the events they lived through. For those readers who are familiar with these writers' lives the book may seem repetitious, but enjoyable all the same.

Tolstoi's last work is well worth reading but NOT in this edition, published by Amazon in the UK. The translation is so poor that it is hardly intelligible and there are numerous English errors which distract from the text. I cannot understand how such a bad translation was accepted for publication. Buyer beware!

A detailed and fascinating work on the Americans who lived in London before, during and after the Blitz and played important roles there during World War II. The three main protagonists are Edward R. Murray a BBC broadcaster, John Gilbert Winant US ambassador to Britain and Averell Harriman who played different roles as a liaison between the US Government and the British. Also Churchill's changing relationship with Roosevelt is described in detail. Apart from the well-known names such as Eisenhower and de Gaulle, ordinary G.I.s and ordinary British people also shed a light on the love/hate relationships between Americans and the British. Amorous affairs flourish in the frenetic atmosphere of war-time London. England, in fact, is invaded, not by the German army as Hitler had hoped, but by the thousands of G.I.s who landed in Britain to prepare for D Day.
Well documented and fast paced this book is a must for anyone interested in World War II and the successes and strains between the allies preparing for the invasion of France and for the final victory over Germany.

This unusually long book (750 pages) never lost my interest, always kept me absorbed, was never tedious in spite of detailed descriptions of public and private life during Theodore Roosevelt's and William Howard Taft's presidencies. I had already read several books on Theodore Roosevelt who is such a colorful figure, but knew little about William Howard Taft who comes alive in these pages as a benign and friendly character almost pushed into a presidential role which he did not feel was suitable for him. As for the great friendship between the two men, like all political friendships, it was doomed to end when personal ambitions took over.
Wives, children, brothers and friends are delineated to round out the portraits and actions of the two presidents and of course the
press also plays a big role in the book and is instrumental in rousing public opinion and pushing through legislation to overthrow the trusts, to attack the bosses and their political power and to try to rid the US of corruption at all levels of politics.
Any reader interested in the politics of the United States and particularly in that period will not be disappointed on reading this book. Also, I couldn't help thinking how much light it also throws on the problems facing the United States today, problems of inequality, of the role of money in elections, the changing roles of women, problems of racism in the Philippines...
To sum up: totally engrossing!

Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Yoga Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief
Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Yoga Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief

Prix : EUR 17,70

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Help for Backaches, 21 mai 2013

This book is aimed at anyone (in other words everyone) who has suffered from back or neck aches. It is written by a doctor who studied under the founder of Iyengar Yoga and who cured her own back troubles as a result. As the title indicates it is a gentle approach which can be followed without fear of injury as the instructions are very clear and progressive and the photographs excellent. It is an adaptation of Hatha Yoga which is perhaps better known and uses props to help the person reach postures that would otherwise be too difficult to achieve. Inverted poses and forward and backward bending poses are not included as they are considered possible causes of injury. No doubt with practice one could eventually attempt those postures , but you will not find them in this book. This is a very good book for beginners and also for more advanced students who want to ease certain aches and pains in their bodies, or who are returning to exercise after an injury.
