Yoga & Diabetes: Your Guide to Safe and Effective Practice

This is a good basic book on Yoga aimed especially at diabetics. It is clearly developed with useful illustrations of the postures and warnings for diabetics with special problems.
I did not find it particularly useful as I have been doing Yoga for years and also have had diabetes for years, but no doubt for the newly diagnosed and/or the person new to Yoga this book could be a useful guide.

This is a very exciting and detailed account of the Entebbe rescue of the passengers on an Air France plane flying from Israel to Paris that was hijacked by Arab and German extremists and flown to Uganda. Based on the records of the time and individual accounts by the hostages themselves, we watch the hesitations and decisions painfully assumed in Israel, France and Germany in regard to the demands of the terrorists to liberate their imprisoned comrades in various jails and then free the hostages. We also experience the day to day trauma of the hostages held in an abandoned building at the Entebbe airport. The final decision taken in Israel, as we know, was to attempt a risky military liberation in a far-away country where planes would have to refuel and the attack take place in an unfriendly territory. After the non-Israelis among the passengers were freed by the terrorists and only Israelis held as hostages, five planes flew out from Israel, one a hospital plane for possible wounded and four filled with soldiers, armaments, and vehicles. The resulting successful liberation is described in detail as well as the aftermath of the operation and its effect on the countries involved.

This is an exciting novel that reads like factual history and makes us think of today's attitudes to dictatorship and democracy. These are the last years of Cicero's life as he battles to preserve the Roman Republic threatened on all sides by ambitious politicians, as recounted by his faithful secretary who tries to save both Cicero's life and his works. Violence and killings abound as well as treachery and cold ambition. The Republic disappears, replaced by dictatorship and a lust for empire. Many of Cicero's speeches are touched on as he was a great orator. The Roman way of life comes alive with its slaves, its geography, its wars, its Senate and laws, its violence, its games, its marital customs. Although the reader knows that Cicero will be assassinated in the end, he or she cannot help being carried along with the fast-moving suspense as the dangers to Cicero accumulate. Also, the entire story is recounted by a very attractive character, Cicero's secretary, who did exist and who tried in vain to preserve all of Cicero's speeches and other writings.

In this detailed, scholarly work historian Ellis explains how four figures were instrumental after the War of Independence in forging a federal nation with a constitution of checks and balances. The four, Hamilton, Madison, Washington and Jay (as well as Morris, Gouverneur Morris and Jefferson) used their political convictions and brilliance to push through a federal system on the 13 reluctant states and a disparate population that was more attached to their local interests than to nationhood. The four used Washington's fame as well as political cunning to persuade a majority of nine states to accept a federal system of governance while compromising on states rights and the existence of slavery in the south. Finally, even New York State and Rhode Island signed the new Constitution of the United States of America which ensured that a real nation, not a group of quarreling states, was born. Numerous quotations of letters and conversations support Ellis' interpretations of this dramatic period as well as interesting notes and references to other historians.

For a less dry account of this same period I would recommend the very readable and exciting MIRACLE AT PHILADELPHIA by historian Catherine Drinker Bowen.

This is a good read and an exciting spy story. The novel depicts in a dramatic and detailed way the conflicting ambitions, fears and treacheries in post-war Berlin under Russian occupation. Real and fictional characters (American, German, Russian) rub shoulders and, although the Stasi (secret police) has not yet been created in Eastern Berlin, everyone is under surveillance and everyone is a possible victim of betrayal and violence.
A love story weaves in and out of these events, but the main thread is whether the hero can get out of Berlin before it is too late.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of post-war Germany and who wants a fast paced story, full of suspense and surprises.

In the long tradition of alternate history or dystopia novels (such as Huxley's BRAVE NEW WORLD, Sinclair Lewis' IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE, George Orwell's 1984 and Philip Roth's THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA), Sansom's novel describes Great Britain as having given in to appeasement in the 1930s and having made peace with Germany. Hitler is dying, the war in Russia continues, Churchill has gone underground, Beaverbrook is prime minister and Mosley is Home Secretary with his Blackshirts everywhere. Jews are rounded up to face an unknown future, violence, repression, strikes, torture abound in a London engulfed in a yellow smog.
The book is a page turner, each scene leading to another dramatic confrontation. It is completely engrossing and historically interesting since there were in Great Britain, as in France, pro-Fascist movements and members of the Government (Lord Halifax, Chamberlain) who were in favor of appeasement.
For those readers interested in history, I suggest they read the author's comments at the end of the work on the actual history of the period.
To sum up: highly recommended

This is the second book I have read recently written by a surgeon who is tackling the subject of aging and dying. These books are not depressing; on the contrary they are very humane in their approach and realistic since their comments are based on actual medical experience. The book by Doctor Gawande refers to the earlier work HOW WE DIE and discusses his own experiences with his patients and within his own family. Both surgeons agree that there comes a time when the body can no longer survive and that time should be respected by doctors. As Doctor Gawande points out modern medicine can always find a way to prolong life (and therefore the suffering of the patient) by taking away this, adding that, fixing something here, inserting something there, but is that humane? This book is of interest to all of us and in particular to people who realize that they are aging or who are having to care for elderly relatives.

Here's a good book for dog lovers and also for lovers of these English novelists and poet. Dogs played an important role in their lives, bringing joy and accompanying them everywhere. Of course there is a certain amount of repetition in each chapter but not too much. Retracing their relationship with their dogs meant following their lives, both literary and social. For readers who don't know about their lives this book gives them a good summary of the events they lived through. For those readers who are familiar with these writers' lives the book may seem repetitious, but enjoyable all the same.

Tolstoi's last work is well worth reading but NOT in this edition, published by Amazon in the UK. The translation is so poor that it is hardly intelligible and there are numerous English errors which distract from the text. I cannot understand how such a bad translation was accepted for publication. Buyer beware!

A detailed and fascinating work on the Americans who lived in London before, during and after the Blitz and played important roles there during World War II. The three main protagonists are Edward R. Murray a BBC broadcaster, John Gilbert Winant US ambassador to Britain and Averell Harriman who played different roles as a liaison between the US Government and the British. Also Churchill's changing relationship with Roosevelt is described in detail. Apart from the well-known names such as Eisenhower and de Gaulle, ordinary G.I.s and ordinary British people also shed a light on the love/hate relationships between Americans and the British. Amorous affairs flourish in the frenetic atmosphere of war-time London. England, in fact, is invaded, not by the German army as Hitler had hoped, but by the thousands of G.I.s who landed in Britain to prepare for D Day.
Well documented and fast paced this book is a must for anyone interested in World War II and the successes and strains between the allies preparing for the invasion of France and for the final victory over Germany.
