The author is poorly served by the marketing of this book. Had I know from the beginning that it was only a teaser I would still have downloaded it, and very liekely have followed up with a purchase. But the publishers, by not being upfront, has instead annoyed me with ther implied lack of respect for customers, and I did not buy the book.

Others are seemingly able to make a living with free loss leader introductions to their work, and/or getting people to download teasers despite the fact that they are clearly promoted as such. Going by the little I read, this was very well written, and the story line had potential to evolve past bought the Tshirt by numbers. Why then do both author and publisher have so little faith in the product, the book and author respectivly, that they resort to underhanded marketing. Makes no sense except if they cynically disregard their potential clients. And that is seriously short sighted. The market is full of excellent books, readers know it, and are concious of their impact when they champion an author. They know that they are part of parcel of the marketing machine, and publishers should beware that word of mouth is not just one way, it can just as quickly turn against them.

This was free, yet I have not read a better book in a long time. Not due to perfect writing, but thanks to an author who manages to explore coming of age, dysfunctional group dynamics and some pretty dark themes without undue sentimentalism. Pushing things to extremes is possible largely due to the setting at the heart of a fictional team/contact sport, a sort of cross between Manga (women/men =co-ed), raw urban indie sports and the well oiled machine of US foot ball.

It is not a parallel universe in the paranormal or sci fi sense, but still a sufficiently different context to allow the reader to attach themselves to a wide gallery of characters who in a familiar context probably would have come across as wholly dismissable. Their need to win and the underlying danger and momentum of the game drives the plot as much as the main character's ever present fight for survival, and it is as much gripping as engaging.

I highly recommend the book. I certainly became a fan despite probably not being the kind of person the author imagined as a core audience, (ie a middle aged woman definitively not into sports), and just hope that my enthusiasm does not scare of the younger readers I expect the book was intended for.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A likable, focused and action ready heroine you want to follow into some 'interesting' scenarios, 13 juin 2014

Feisty focused heroine + unusual plot +. well written suspense = refreshing read.
Didn't get 5* as there were a little too many inconguities for adult readers not prepared to completely suspend their common sence, The "improbables" would, however, not be picked up on had it been a syfi /hero cartoon based movie, so frankly not too much of an issue if you just wan't to switch off and enjoy a change of scenery.
