4.0 étoiles sur 5 Another very good book in the series, 28 juillet 2015
Again a very good book in the Underdead series. To avoid spoilers I won't go into any details but I was glad to see the evolution of several characters, as well as the evolution of their relationships. And the humour is thankfully still very present (just looking at the cover shows that humour is an important part of the book!).

The only really bad thing about this book is that we can't read the next one yet! I must specify that like the others, it is a stand-alone book, but I'd still love to know what happens to the characters next. I've read that the author is currently working on the 4th, I hope it will come out in a not too distant future!

This dystopian story is based on an original premise: a world where happiness is the ultimate goal of society. What could possibly go wrong with that? An awful lot!

I really liked how the author thought out this quite simple idea and built a full and complex world, with different types of characters, living very different lives, but with their paths crossing. It is very interesting to discover the specificities of this world on the journey of this book, along with the action happening to the characters.

I was also surprised by who the bad guys where; I don't want to give any spoiler but it did come as a surprise for me.

On the whole, a good read if you want to discover a different dystopian society, that will make you think, and with interesting characters along the path.

This story was very well done, in a very dystopian universe which makes it disturbing. Not a read for everyone (not for too young or too sensitive an audience), but good to make one think about the role of women and/or robots in a society.

The theme reminded me slightly of the excellent (and also disturbing) Swedish TV-series Real Humans.

I quite enjoyed this book. The story was interesting although I found the plot a little bit too convenient at times, and I felt that there were a few chronological gaps.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the fact that I could listen to the pieces of music that were mentioned in the story, that really enhanced my reading experience. BTW, my kindle phone app mentioned that the device could not read the track but in fact it worked, I just had to press the little sound speaker icon.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Enjoyable book, in my opinion better than the first one, 17 avril 2015

First of all I must say that I'm not a YA anymore, I probably would have liked the story better if I were younger.

That being said, I still enjoyed the story, and was very impressed by the author, who is very young but still appears to have a real talent. The story is engrossing, the vocabulary is rich, and she obviously did her research into several facts (I won't reveal anything to avoid any spoiler). The characters are interesting and I liked the way what they learned in the first volume is used in this one. I especially enjoyed how they are able to really act as a team, each special ability complementing the other.

Sometimes the second book in a series is a disappointment, it is definitely not the case here. If anything, I found it better than the first one, especially since it really built on the world that was presented before. If you liked Aegis Rising I guess you'll like this one too, so just go for it!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Interesting story but confusing at times, 1 mars 2015

I liked this story but found it sometimes difficult to follow: there are several plots going on a the same time, a lot of characters, and you only get small pieces of information at once. It does make sense after a while and it is nice to discover what was the meaning of some cryptic scenes, but the reader needs to remember very well what happened before, in order to make sense of it all.

I liked it when everything made sense but I must say that I did not understand everything in the end, they are some loose ends for some of the plots. That's why I only gave 3 stars to the book. Maybe the experience would be different for another reader, for instance if you read it all at once and not in small chunks like I did it might be easier to remember relevant details.

Nevertheless it was an interesting read and I liked all the plots that had a conclusion.

I'll probably read more books by this author, hoping that the end will feel more satisfying for me.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Nice read, 17 février 2015
I usually don't read much mystery, I'm more of an SF&F person, but I really enjoyed this book. I like the touch of paranormal in it (but it remains very believable, it is not used to find an easy way out for the mystery).

I guess I'll probably buy the next book in the series.

I loved that short story. It is a quick read but thoroughly enjoyable. I'm usually not much into zombie stories but that's not really the point here. The point is the great humour - very British! The plot is only secondary here.

I hope the author will write more stories with the same humour, I would love to read them!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Richard Levesque confirms that he is a great writer, even outside of his usual genre, 9 février 2015

I must say that I was quite dubious about liking the story. I knew nothing about what happened to Japanese descendants in the US after Pearl Harbor, and I usually never read historical fiction. But after reading two other novels by Richard Levesque and loving them, I decided to take a leap of faith and give a try to his brand new novel.

I was not disappointed. His writing is again very good, the characters are well developed and very likable, and I got very quickly into the story, always wanting to know what would happen next. He seems to have done his research very well and the settings are very realistic, so I was at the same time reading a very compelling story and learning about the history of a group of people I knew absolutely nothing about. The only small downside was that some bits of the plot were slightly too good to be true (I won't go into details to avoid any spoilers), but hey, it's fiction, and it did not really distract me from the story. And I found the ending at the same time surprising and still believable, so it was a good way to finish the book (I hate it when the plot builds up and I expect something grand, and then the ending is very disappointing, or everything just solves itself too easily - here the ending was great).

I would recommend this book to anyone who liked other books by Richard Levesque, even if you're more into SF&F than historical fiction (there are still several references to the SF culture scattered in the book). And more generally to everyone who loves a great story, with characters you get attached to, and that make you learn something along the way.

This book is set in a not-too-far dystopian future, where privacy does not exist anymore. The main character survives by doing some off the grid detective work, until he has to try to save his daughter from terrible accusations, which sends him into a big adventure.

The novel mixes genres and I'm sure it would be enjoyable for both SF and detective fans. I love the way it is written, I really enjoy the humor that I already loved in the first book I read by this author, Take back tomorrow. I will definitely read more books by this author.
