Edmund Schirmer's first book is truly fascinating. The story covers a family saga through period of 4 years in Singapore, when the British were thrown out after the Japanese invasion. Most people with an interest for history tend to focus on the events that happened in Europe after the German invasion; comparatively few are aware that at the same time, the Japanese led a ferocious war in the Far East. The book is a true page-turner, from page one until the end.

On the downside, some imperfections in style, maybe a bit too much glorification of the family elders. And a few small mistakes eg: the US Air Force is USAF (not USAAF); the bomb that hit Hiroshima was called "Fat Boy"… Lire la suite
