for a non-French reader it's really hard, might be best to read it in translation. I recognise that the story and characters are excellent though, if you can get into the letter format...
(note: lots of typos in this edition)

I am making progress with my French. I enjoyed this, and some pages read like poetry if you imagine there is a line break wherever there is a comma. However I had to use the dictionary quite a bit. I recommend it, but for those English speakers wanting to get to grips with a French classic in the original I think Le Rouge et le noir is a better bet, the characters are more interesting. But as a picture of a stifling "bourgeois" 19th century social environment, and one woman's struggle against it, this is excellent.

My French only really became good enough recently to enable me try this in the original, and I'm so glad I did. The style is elegant and restrained, and the characters fascinating, particularly the complex Julien Sorel. I recommend it highly to anglophone readers in France who wish to "have a go" at a French classic.
