Some time ago I have reviewed iOS 4 Programming Cookbook. When this one appeared I was simply curious how does new face of 'iOS Cooking' looks like. And I am pretty amazed.

First of all, parts of the book were redesigned. Big plus here. First chapter was redesigned such way it now gently introduces into XCode and Objective-C development. In iOS 5 Cookbook, you basically start with very simple examples and move towards more complicated stuff. Nevertheless, I still suggest buying book dedicated strictly to Objective-C in case you haven't used this language before.

The same refers to Networking related chapter. It was really improved. In this edition, titles of chapters give you detailed overview of what you can expect in networking related sections of the book.

Operations and threads from 'iOS 4 Cook Book' as well as the content of 'Concurrent Programming in Mac OS X and iOS' book are now packed into single chapter: 'Concurrency'. If you have bought 'Concurrent Programming in Mac OS X and iOS' you will find this material duplicated. However, in case of people who will start with iOS 5 Programming Cookbook, this is a plus, as you have everything in one place.

I enjoyed the style of the book before, and I enjoy it now. However, there are few things you will miss. First of all, when it comes to CoreData related topics, you will miss recipes for model versioning. And this topic is a must. Especially in a cookbook. Sooner or later, your data model will evolve and you will face it. Another thing you will probably miss are Instruments. If you came to place were the efficiency plays a role, you wont' find help here. These are the only reasons I am giving here 4 stars instead of 5.

I would suggest to a friend. Definitely.

Great, but missing something. 18 février 2012

As a seasoned developer who is new to iOS, Objective-C and XCode, this is the second book I've read on those subjects, the first being Programming iOS 5 (Early Release ebook edition) from O'Reilly. That book was good (if you can get past that author's fiction-like writing style), but I needed something more in the cookbook style of quick and to-the-point examples. And this Cookbook delivers just that! The author's writing is clear, concise, and accurate. Too bad he didn't write the Programming iOS 5 book.

As the title of this review hints at, I was somewhat surprised that this book did not cover the topics of "wiring up" UI elements in Interface Builder through the use of IBOutlets and IBActions. If it had that topic, I would have given it a full five-star rating. So if you want details on that subject, which I've come to realize is a key part to developing iOS apps in XCode, you'll want another book to cover that. Fortunately the Programming iOS 5 O'Reilly book covers this in full detail.

I recommend this book to other people 17 mars 2012

Bought this a few days ago. I got the previous edition of the same book but this edition is a complete revamp of iOS 4 Cookbook from this author. This one includes storyboards, ARC and many more iOS 5 specific features so I'm very happy. Couldn't ask for more

The chapters that I like the most are chapters 1 and 2 simply because they are very easy to understand and y'all about cocoa touch fundamentals and UI components. After these, my fav chapter is the concurrency chapter since I've always been behind on that subject but am starting to grasp it better every day by reading this book and practicing.

I asked for some new features in the last review I left on the book and almost all of them are included in this edition. For next edition how about some information about Git in Xcode? I use GitHub to store my projects and I know Xcode does support Git but I have never been able to understand how to use that feature. I know this is not directly related to iOS development so any information about Git in the next release will be appreciated.

Two big issues... 3 août 2012

First the big issues I have with this book.

1) In a standard recipe book each recipe should be a standalone recipe. Building one recipe on top of another is essentially a tutorial style type of projection creation book of which there are plenty. If you look at a cookbook (a real cookbook) you won't need to bake that cake you made in the previous recipe in order to make your omelet. That would be insane, and it is equally insane here. In essence, this is not a cookbook but a mutated version of a tutorial book. Publisher - does the word "encapsulation" ring a bell? If not ask the dev who wrote it to guide you.

2) All of the UI work in this book is done programatically. There is absolutely no mention of IBOutlet or IBAction. If you make your entire UI like this, you are going to be "that person" at work. It will take you hours to do what others do in minutes, and your code will be cluttered and hard to maintain. IBOutles and IBActions were in the iOS 4 cook book. Of course, there should be standalone recipes that show you how to programatically create UIViews for times when you might need to do so, but to make the entire book like this is nuts.

My guess is the publisher was trying to save money by creating this recipe book like this. Note to the publisher: I would rather pay an extra $5 and have you do it right, than to buy this glorified tutorial book. Next time I'll just return it.

On the plus side, there is a lot of info in this book and it can serve as a good reference - though the CoreAnimation Framework is essentially non-existent.

You will write iOS apps in less than you think 4 mars 2012

Being a C/BASIC hardcore programmer for mobile devices in a past life, I enjoyed very much this book because it really helped me grasp quickly many basic and intermediate topics on iOS 5 Objective-C programming, would say after reading the full book I have all needed to program good basic applications; and even after getting practice and experience, guess I will eventually resort on this book as reference. In my opinion this book is awesome and a must for beginners and intermediates.

Honestly, I consider myself not very much fan to the Cookbook format, however this is one case where the author, Vandad Nahavandipoor, exploits it wonderfully to show and develop case after case of what you will face as an iOS programmer, both for iPad and iPhone! Actually took me 7 days reading it from cover to cover, and it was an easy reading, examples flowing smoothly. He misses nothing and includes good explanations and concise screenshots when needed.

Now, the table of contents covers almost everything is needed to develop any type of application: Location & Maps, Networking, Audio & Video, plus some "must-have" topics like Multitasking, Graphics & Animations or Core Motion. My favorite chapter is #2, because it provides the building blocks for GUI programming, including corresponding source code examples!

Something I would like to see is bluetooth or network programming basics, but maybe I'm overreaching and those are advanced topics, out of the scope if this book.

Hope you finf this review helpful!
