This is one of a series of children's books by Jean Craighead George dealing with the thirteen moons of the year. Each book centers on a particular animal or bird and describes his life in his chosen environment during a given month of the year. The Moon of the Winter Bird is the December moon, and the story is about a song sparrow who did not migrate from his home by the Olentangy River in Ohio but spent the winter in a spruce tree by a dining room window. We learn how the sparrow chose to live on this property, which included a large meadow between the house and the river, how he chose his mate and raised three families of baby birds, and how he survived snow, ice, and cold on the night of the winter solstice. The books in this series have different illustrators, but they all feature beautiful and realistic full-page paintings. Some of my favorites of the ten illustrations in this book show the spruce tree by the house, a man slipping on an icy sidewalk by the tree, the meadow beside the river, a downy woodpecker, and the family's cat in the snow. This story and its pictures can be enjoyed by people of any age, and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

I bought this because the illustrator was a very dear friend who recently was killed in a plane accident. I gave my original copy to my daughter and had no hopes of replacing it. Great seller; getting this book means a lot to me.
