Imagine. A world to come where books would be forbidden, where firemen would not exist to extinguish flames anymore but to catch light. Instead, they would burn books and people who own them.
Guy Montag, a fireman, begins to be aware of the situation since he met Clarisse, an extremely curious and smart girl. He wasn't used to ask himself so many questions before and the reason why books are forbidden : so as nobody is asking questions and everyone believes everything you tell them. Of course, books are a powerful weapon that allow you to form your own opinion. So the solution is : no more right to read, no more intellectual freedom if you don't want to be immediately stopped by the Hound, a robot in charge of smelling bad spirits. This is rather disturbing, but not that impossible when you consider more and more people are attracted by tv or sports and less and less people read. "If you don't want a man unhappy politically, don't give him two sides to a question to worry him ; give him one. Better yet, give him none".
