It is not Jonathan Swift's fault that the writing is archaic. This may be over looked if it was not so redundant and trivial. It can easily put you to sleep.

We all know that these stories are supposed to a thin veil for an agenda. Everyone from H. G. Wells to Ayn Rand hit you over the head with their agenda form the first. But no Jonathan rattles with 10 pages to describe what is in his pockets included his hidden pocket. (Who Cares?) And the book is filled with mundane descriptions. I think he is using this to flesh out what would be a 25 page manifesto. It is not until you get half way through the book that, with the exception of a few snide remarks about kings he finally coughs up his point.

"..., whether a private man's house might not be better defended by himself, his children, and family, then by half-a-dozen rascals, picked up at a venture in the streets for small wages, who might get a hundred times more by cutting their throats?"

He goes on to pick on just about all the politics and ventures of England at the time. Paranoid readers can see the parallels form the book and today's news. However if it is that important than dump Swift and just watch the news.

Anyhow it is not worth the time to read this book unless you are interested in someone that defecates at the end of his chain and dells about it in detail.

Very happy of my purchase. This book and its cd are perfect for my brother. He is 13 and works his English in a smart way. I bought the book without Amazon but "livres allemand". It was very quick (about 5 days from UK to France) and safe. I'm glad to read this good story too.

Great value for money. The best of J. Swift, pocket size, comes with a an interesting introduction and footnotes. Obviously, not as complete or recent bibliography wise as the Norton edition but easier to read on the other hand, as the small print of the footnotes in the Norton is quite microscopic. One of my favourites from the Bantam classics.

The book Gulliver's Travels, by Jonathan Swift, is a very interesting and well thought out book. It is about the travels of an Englishman named Gulliver and the lands that he visits during his travels. Most books could not hold together without some underlying plot or scheme, but the way that Jonathan Swift wrote Gulliver's Travels, it isn't totally necessary. Throughout the entire book, Gulliver goes about describing in detail how eight different societies work and function as he observed them during his travels.
The true beauty of the book is not completely appreciated until a little more is known about the author, Jonathan Swift, and the time period he wrote in. The events and people in this book do not follow the famous clause: "The following story and characters are completely fictional. Any resemblance to real-life people and events is purely coincidental." Swift, as a matter of fact, takes great pride in using real-life people to base his characters on. Many of the rulers and lands in the book exaggerate the faults and likenesses of the current rulers and lands of the time period.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who can take the time to sit down and read it.

Quite an interesting story, purely fictional but in which the reader is involved easily. We are introduced to different worlds, various ethnicities who enable us to travel and to dream. Not a book for children only but for adults too.
