Intelligent, witty, fierce!

A wonderful book about the feminine condition... The contrast between the mature narrator whose marraige is on "pause" and the group of adolescent girls angrily testing their powers on each other is beautifully done. The unraveling of the story of the teen girls' clan and their revenge on the "different" girl gave me the chills -- This provocative incident is certainly drawn from life, since something like that happened at my high school, and similar incidents to other women friends. I also liked the descriptions of the creative writing class.
Why only 3 stars? Well, I'm not really sure...! First, I was spoiled by Siri's "Thinking, Looking" composed of brilliant essays. Then, "The Summer Without Men" left me vaguely unsatisfied & disappointed, as if the author introduces a provocative story and then skims over the surface without going in deeply enough (it should have been double the length).
It has already become a cult book, but for me it's not a keeper, except perhaps as cult book to keep! But for all its faults, this is A MUST READ. Enjoy and decide for yourself.
