An absolutely cracking read
le 26 janvier 2013
As a die-hard science fiction and fantasy geek, I have come a little late to the world of the thriller so I don't have a particularly broad knowledge upon which to draw for comparisons. I have read a few of the forensic thriller genre and found them rather `samey' and have generally struggled with Tom Clancy's obsession with multiple characters and irrelevant technical details, although I really enjoyed his `Executive Orders: A Jack Ryan Novel'.
I was given the second of Lee Child's Jack Reacher stories (Die Trying) and found myself barely able to put it down - brilliantly written, characters with depth and a plot that constantly changed direction. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that I bought some more Jack Reachers in the hope that they wouldn't be samey and formulaic.
I was not disappointed. This, the first in the series, is again brilliantly written with a lovely twisty-turny plot and as for Jack Reacher - what a guy! (a little homage to `Ace' Rimmer for all you `Red Dwarf' nerds out there). The closest comparison I can draw is with Clancy's John Clarke - loyal, honourable and unstoppably capable.
All-in-all, a completely superb book and I'm looking forward to reading the third in the series (Tripwire: A Jack Reacher Novel) after I've finished a few of my Christmas batch of `new' sci-fi books.
