This is an excellent book to read to a 9 or 10 year old. The vocabulary is challenging and for that reason I would recommend an adult reading the story to a child of that age. The story line after several chapters becomes a cliff-hanger and retains a child's interest. It is a sweet story, contains humor, lovely illustrations, and also a certain amount of wisdom. A good read, and an excellent way for a child to add to their vocabulary.
