Wonderful book on France, English and education !
le 6 avril 2009
This revealing memoir is a real pleasure to read. Intriguing and even suspenseful, the story grips the reader like a novel, with excellent characters and dialogue, while offering well-researched information to put the narrator's adventures in context. The heroine, Alice Wunderland, is a forty-year old IT specialist who decides to train as an English teacher when she's thrown out of work by the high tech downturn. What she discovers at the Sorbonne is the cruel and strange world of competitive exams for teachers intended to select the "best", but which, in one absurd incident after another, looks like an immense machine run amuck. A remarkably insightful book about France.
