Comme l'indique le titre je suis encore en pleine lecture, mais je ne regrette en rien mon achat, ce livre est impossible à poser, on se sent forcer de continuer de lire encore et encore. Pour ma part, j'apprécie que l'auteur ai utilisé une langue parlée pour écrire son livre, plutôt que de tout retranscrire dans un registre plus soutenu, cela aurait complètement dénaturé les narrations des différents personnages.

Je suis allée voir le film, l'ai trouvé bien, donc souhaité lire le livre - pas encore fini - mais très intéressant. On voit "l'autre côté" de l'histoire du sud des Etats-Unis des années 60.

Un livre qui se lit avec beaucoup de plaisir, cette histoire d'amitié sort des sentiers battus. Vaut le coup d'être lu en anglais !

Le Sud des Etats Unis dans les années 60. L'esclavage a disparu officiellement depuis longtemps mais la ségrégation est sévère et inhumaine. Portraits de femmes très touchants et pleins de vie. Des personnages qui nous poursuivront longtemps et nous font réfléchir à la nature humaine.On parle souvent de 'page turner', mais sur la fin, j'ai plutôt ralenti pour rester plus longtemps avec les personnages.

Excellent book which I am recommending to all of my friends. Only regret was that the print was too small in the book which I purchased. I now look forward to seeing the film when it comes here.

Il faut bien maîtriser l'anglais pour lire et surtout savourer ce roman en VO.
L'histoire est passionnante. On est plongé dans une autre époque avec une réalité saisissante.
Le style est très fluide. On a bien du mal à s'arrêter.
J'ai adoré.

Les caractères sont minuscules. Heureusement que le roman est vraiment très attachant sinon il y aurait de quoi décourager, même avec des lunettes !

This first novel places its author, Kathryn Stockett, immediately among the best. While its material is drawn from her own first-hand experience, Ms Stockett has produced a great piece of literary fiction; the feat is all the more remarkable that she states in the post-face that she undertook this writing in memory of her beloved black nanny. It is objective, well observed, sensitive, at times humoristic. the form is very clever as the story is told by three narrators: a white young lady and two black women, one peaceful, philosophical and somewhat fatalistic, the other getting easily in trouble by speaking her mind. The psychology of the three characters is suggested indirectly, rather that described, as when one of the maids looking at a huge official building muses: "I wonder how much they pay to clean this place." There is a genuine concern for one another between these so different women, at the core of their joint enterprise: the publication of the book..
I have reread the book nearly immediately and I shall certainly read again. (I know it will cost me a lot in presents!!! but so what! one does not so often find such a gem.
I have ordered the complete reading of this text on CD's and am looking forward to listening to the different accents and general interpretation.

While drawing from her immediate fine perception, Kathryn Stockett's book is entirely fiction. Told by turn by three different protagonists, a southern white young woman and two black women, it is admirably well constructed. The three ladies, in turn each from her vantage point, account for the de facto situation in Jackson, Miss (or it could be in any similar place) where black women are second class citizens deprived of consideration by most of the white people they faithfully serve and even by their own husbands. In secret, at great risk of retortion, they bravely come together to actually write the book which, once published, create a tremendous commotion in the community, an unacceptable scandal for some, an eye-opener for others. Each character is presented with all her (or sometimes his) complex mixture of solidly entrenched convictions and/or personal traits. Even the children appear as distinct personalities. It bears some similarities with Harper Lee's "To kill a mocking bird" while being quite different. Both present the scene honestly, they do not demonstrate.
Ms Stockett's three voices add to the feeling of objectivity while making for interesting reading. The particular speeches of the black women is cleverly suggested in the writing (I suprised myself reading aloud to get the effect. I wonder how the French translation will handle it. This really should be read in the original text. I'm impatient to listen to the audio book which should render all its flavor; it has received very favorable reviews.

For a start, I have to applaud Kathryn for taking on such an theme and for the depth of her creativity. It is marvelous. It is written in an engaging and expressive manner that I find appealing . Your descriptions are rich, the characters are intuitively observed and the smooth flow of the story made it a compelling read. The full brilliance of this story is glaring for all see. Just coming from reading Fortune Calls, it wraps up my week very well.
