This book is quite different to any book on the Tour de France out there (at least to the many of them I have read). I enjoy the Tour on TV every summer and even occasionally go to see the riders when the race comes to my region but I honestly had never come close to realized how it is to be inside the tour for 3 exhausting weeks. This book really shows a side of the Tour that, unless you are planning to join the caravanne, next summer you are not likely to discover by yourself.

The book is a little too British in the sense that if (like me) you are not English many of the book’s characters (like Need’s fellow journalists and TV commentators) won’t ring a bell to you and that takes a little fun out of it. This is probably the only thing I didn’t appreciate about the book; otherwise, it is very entertaining, honest, and funny. I especially liked the words Ned devoted to Thomas Voeckler. Those lines alone showed me that the author really understands French cycling culture.
