Présentation de l'éditeur

Bug Out and Live!
My qualifications:
I have been hiking and backpacking for 47 years. I graduated from Air Force Survival School. (SERE). I know from experience what gear you need in your 72 hour kit to be safe and comfortable in most conditions.
Why does the book start with automobile survival kits?
Being stranded in your car is the most likely case. Most people have enough things in their home to prepare for survival. Why not have it with you?
What is unique about your Go Bag?
  • Many bug out bags are too heavy. It is obvious they were designed by people who never went backpacking. I lighten the survival bag by omitting items that are not needed. The weight of survival bag design is only 25-30 pounds including food and water. Because it is light, you will be able to walk longer and faster if you do not have a car. It has everything you will need to stay three days in the wilderness with enough food. If you needed to, you could stretch the food for over a week.
  • This bugout kit is inexpensive. You may have most of the clothes you need. Your only expenses are a sleeping bag, tent and pack. I chose the most inexpensive options for you.
  • I often spend 3 days in the wilderness with similar gear. I know it will work both in the wilderness, city and every place in between.
  • This bug out kit does not include military gear. Military gear is designed for a different use and is too heavy. There are better and cheaper alternatives.
I will most likely be in a shelter. Why do I need a bug out bag?
Many shelters take three days to get organized. During that time, you will have your own food, clothes and bedding. A tent can provide privacy indoors.
What is different about your book?
I describe every piece of clothing and other gear you will need in your bug out bag. I explain options for everything giving advantages and disadvantages. I give you information to make informed choices from simple options.
Why only five seconds?
This is the worst case. If you prepare to bug out in five seconds, you can make other preparations if you have extra time.
You make it sound so easy!
It is easy. In the book, I recommend easy practice to become familiar with your go bag.

About the author:
Gary lives in Colorado and often goes backpacking or hiking with his son. He knows from experience that carrying too much weight is as bad as leaving something essential home. He fell in love with Colorado while at the Air Force Academy. He graduated in 1975 and retired from the Air Force after a career as a pilot.
He wrote this book for a simple reason. The reason is to prepare you for survival if you ever have to "Bug Out and Live!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Practical Advice That Obviously Comes From Experience 6 juillet 2013

This book starts with general preparedness tips and advice, but progresses to specific advice concerning the contents of a Bug-Out-Bag. This is where the book comes into it's own as the author draws on his numerous years of backpacking and outdoor survival experience to offer practical advice that bucks the typical trend of overloading an emergency Bug-Out-Bag.

The author constantly encourages the readers to evaluate the absolute necessity and usefulness of each piece of gear, while offering specific recommendations that will help the reader keep his or her pack weight down.

The book also has some interesting stories that help to drive home the points about preparedness and survival.

This book is well formatted for the kindle with a linked Table of Contents. Unfortunately, the "Go To..." menu doesn't take you directly to the TOC. It sets you on the copyright page where you have to flip forward several pages to the TOC. The book flows well and you should be able to consume all the content in a sitting or two, but I would have preferred a easy access to the TOC for later reference. I like how the author has lots of bolded and italicized headers to break up the book and make it easy to read and skim.

If you enjoyed this book, I also recommend Ultralight Survival: Make a Small and Light Bug Out Bag That Could Save Your Life for even more advice along these lines on creating the lightest and most efficient bug-out-bag possible.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Get this 14 novembre 2014

This book helped me to put together bags that we now carry in our cars. Being prepared is important. Not being prepared is foolish. Prepared for what? How about this:
Wife suddenly develops a headache. No problem: But out Bag has motrin. Kid cuts finger: No problem, Bug out Bag has bandaids. See, it isn't just for the apocalypse anymore! Also, food items have come in handy at times. Since things need to be swapped out from time to time, people appreciate a treat.

Get it, read it, and put one together for you and your loved ones because it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A concise, illustrated guide to survival 12 avril 2013

In California we're always told to have emergency supplies available in case of an earthquake. I'm pretty good about that, but what if we really need to hit the road after a major catastrophe, where there might be no immediate assistance from the government? Maybe I've read too many Zombie books, but I like the premise of this author, who touts having a bug out bag to grab and go, with sufficient supplies to survive for at least three days.

It's clear the author has given this subject a lot of thought, and he brings his own camping experience to show why he selects the various options. The guide is concise, but very complete. I also liked the many photos.

Found it very good. Straight to the point. Doesn't drag on forever. Not a lot of silly uncalled for info. Highly Recommend.

This brief instructional was exactly, and all, that I needed to start the process of putting a basic go-kit together. I like that it assumes nothing more than that I need 3 day's worth of necessities if I have to leave home for some reason, including a simple hike or snowshoeing trip. It gives concise information so that my final kit will be able to efficiently address my needs for food, water, shelter, clothing, first-aid, and communications, not to mention some good reminders to address the potential emotional stressors, such as boredom and fear, and to avoid some of the more common pitfalls, like getting lost and planning and practice.

It's not pumped up with research and explaining why to or not to bring something. Nor does it give countless mind-numbing case studies and stories. There isn't an ounce of Armageddon anywhere to be found. This great, little book just tells it like it is.
