5.0 étoiles sur 5 Japanese->English JMDict/EDict dictionary 10 novembre 2013
Par S. Smith - Publié sur Amazon.com
This is a denshi-jisho -- an electronic dictionary. It looks up words you highlight from a dictionary database.

The database used here is developed by the JMDict/Edict project and in all likelihood -- if you have studied Japanese using the Internet, you have encountered it before. If you have used Rikaichan or several other add-ons for Mozilla and Chrome, you have used this dictionary. If you have visited Jim Breen's site -- [...] you have used this dictionary. It shows up in many of the user implemented Japanese->English Internet dictionaries.

I have a paperwhite bought for studying Japanese. I'd be lost without a good e-dictionary. As far as I know this is the only implementation of the JMDict dictionary that runs in Kindle and in my opinion, it's an excellent implementation.

It works both on the Kindle and on the Android Kindle app.

To select this dictionary from a Kindle as your Japanese->English Dictionary, open a Japanese book within the Kindle, then open your settings menu->Device Options->Language and Dictionaries->Dictionaries->Japanese and select the '電子辞書 Japanese->English Dictionary'. Now when you highlight Japanese words within your book, they will be looked up using this dictionary. There exaamples of typical words looked up on the product page.

I've also tried it on several other Android tablets and so far it has worked on all of them. However it's hard to install on the other Android tablets.

To install on other Android tablets, you have to navigate to the Kindle directory, use the default dictionary on Japanese text to force it's download and copy this dictionary over the default dictionary. In my case, the default dictionary is the Japanese to Japanese Daijisen dictionary (see https://kindle.amazon.com/work/daijisen-x5927-x8f9e-japanese-edition-ebook/B005FNK020/B005FNK020/posts). To simplify this process I wrote a simple shell script. The easiest way I have found to use it is:
1) Install an Android terminal. These are available free on Google Play
2) Copy the script between the equals sign below to your clipboard.
3) Paste it in your terminal window to execute it. You will probably need to add a line feed at the end of your input.
# English->Japanese dictionary
if chdir /mnt/*/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files; then
if test -f $NewDict; then
if test -f $PrevDict; then
cat $NewDict > $PrevDict;
echo Replaced $PrevDict with $NewDict;
echo $PrevDict not found.
echo failed to find $NewDict;
echo Failed to find Kindle data directory;
If all works, you will see a message saying it replaced B005FNK020_EBOK.prc with B00FD9549A_EBOK.prc.

If it says it can't find your Kindle directory, your environment is different than mine. You will need to find where the Kindle data directory is.

If it fails to find B00FD9549A_EBOK.prc, you need to install the Japanese->English dictionary on your device.

If it fails to find B005FNK020_EBOK.prc, possibly you haven't tried to use a dictionary in your Japanese book yet. The other possibility is that your environment uses a different default dictionary than the Daijisen Japanese->Japanese dictionary. You need to determine which dictionary was downloaded and replace the PrevDict value with the correct ..._EBOK.prc value.

WARNING! You do this at your own risk. Your books are all backed up by Amazon so I don't think this script can hurt anything, and I've made it as simple as I can in hopes it is understandable. You should never do something like this unless you understand what you are doing!

I just now tested this script on my Nook HD+ (software version 2.11) and it worked. I have tested the script on a Nook Color, a generic 7" Android tablet and a Nexus 7 all running Android 4.3. I have not tried it on the KitKat release. It will probably work on a Kindle Fire but I haven't tried it.

This dictionary has been really useful for me. I hope you find it useful too.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Jap-Eng Dictionary 13 novembre 2013

Like most people probably will I bought this dictionary to aid my Japanese studies.

As mentioned in another review the dictionary is based on the open source JMDict/Edict project - which means that if you had the mind (and know how) you could pretty much make this same dictionary yourself for free. However I'm happy to pay the small asking price for someone else to have done that work for me.

I own a kindle 4 and have the kindle app on my android tablet - I use this on the tablet only as my kindle is older and doesn't support Japanese.

As also mentioned briefly by someone else the dictionary won't activate by default when you add it to your tablet (though I think it would on a Paperwhite) - by which I mean it will be there and viewable, but you can't use it to check words in Japanese texts straight away.

You have to overwrite another dictionary with the Japanese one, and then use that overwritten dictionary's name to access the Japanese one.

For example, I never intend to use the German dictionary so I called up the free German dictionary in the app and downloaded it. Then in the android file system I found the German dictionary, noted the file name and deleted it. I then renamed the Japanese dictionary with the same name, and copied it to the same location. When I want to use the Japanese dictionary I now have to select German in the dictionary list to get my Japanese definition.

It only takes a minute or two to do and then it's a permanent fix. However, it isn't instinctive. I would never have thought of doing this if I hadn't e-mailed the creator (who included his contact details with the dictionary) and asked how to get it to work. He promptly replied with this work around (Thanks). Now it works fine.

Other than that it's a good, solid, no bells and whistles, dictionary. I've given it four stars due to the need for the work around, and not as a reflection of the content which many Japanese students will already be familiar with from other sources. I haven't had much chance to use it yet but I think it'll be a lot of use to anybody studying Japanese with kindle.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Not functioning as a dictionary 29 janvier 2015

I have been communicating with the Mr.Roger Hausermann, the editor, asking him how to use this electronic dictionary because it does not functioning as
a dictionary where I can not insert any wording I am looking for.

It spreads like a flat novel, so I have to flip the page in order to locate the right one am looking for.

Do you suggest to erase the software that I have downloaded through Amazon and re-download the same version, although I suspect that I have to pay once more after deleting the program.

Appreciate if you can do something for this situation.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Very useful even for JLPT 2&1 students. 28 janvier 2014

After reading some of the reviews I was scared of buying this dictionary but I must say it is almost perfect for my actual japanese level (JLPT 2-1).
1) (+) I have a Kindle PW and I can read perfectly the kanji meaning, description and examples.

2) (+) It is NOT true that it doesn't read hiragana. It does. Expressions like とて、あえて、せっかく、つつある、されば are written in hiragana (in the book that I am reading) and the dictionary recognized their meaning and their kanji in most of them.

3) (+) Since it is made with the EDICT system I think (not sure though) it updates automatically because I have been checking the meaning of the words also in jisho.org, kotoba (imiwa on iphone) and in monash university (EDICT) and the meaning results are the same.

4) (-) It is true that sometimes it misses some grammar or adverbial expressions (it didnt know what it is 禁じ得ない and jisho and imiwa did) and you cannot check the meaning of a kanji given inside on a sentence in examples, that needs to be improved but on the other hand every kanji explanations are large: I was able to find the meaning of 優れ with a different kanji -->勝れ.

5) ($$) It very cheap for all this knoweldge, it is very recommendable, now I am able to follow the plot of the japanese novels!
