Présentation de l'éditeur

This book documents in pictures the most exciting and diverse period in fashion: from 1900 to today, covering high society, uniforms, sportswear, streetwear, and couture. It will appeal to everyone with an interest in fashion as well as students. The last hundred or so years bore witness to the transformation of women's fashion. The restrictive corsetry of the early twentieth century gave way to looser styles such as Chose made fashionable by French fashion designer Paul Poiret. As women's lives changed dramatically under the shadow of two World Wars, so the style of female dress was altered beyond recognition. From home dressmaking to couture, from rationing to "The New Look," from the hirth of the teenager to mass manufacture, from high society to celehrity culture. Over 400 photographs and illustrations, many published for the first time, tell the stylish story of a fashion revolution.

Not about Audrey, in case you thought it centered around her style. The first half is very good up until 1960;s then the fashion references seem to be more the bizarre, funky influences, not what the fashion houses put out that was actually worn by the culture. But from the 1900 to about 1964 it presents a very good visual history on the changing female apparel.

Enjoyed turning every page and reading all the captions, the rest of the text i may not ever read because for me, its all about the illustrations. I did learn a couple of things just from that-why artist disrespect commercial artists, for example. Some of those pieces were not art and did not even do their job of making the clothes more appealing. And when the models bodies were just too real-ly human, illustrators could elongate every part from foot to head, helping to create that impossible standard of beauty. Some of the art is just delightful as well, but i will leave it to you to chose your own-i did like quite a few, but also felt that much fashion art that i recall was not included. None the less, the prints are good and there are many. So enjoy. To me, worth the money!

Love this book. I saw it in the store and then found it cheaper via Amazon of course. Anyhow, this is a fairly sizable book, meaning it's got quite a few pages. It is also wonderfully illustrated with tons of examples of how fashion has changed over the years. This is a wonderful read for anyone who follows fashion as it gives you a great sense of how we got to where we are in today's more modern trends. The text is even entertaining for me, which says a lot for myself ;-)
