The year is 1984. Aomame sits in a taxi on the expressway in Tokyo.
Her work is not the kind which can be discussed in public but she is in a hurry to carry out an assignment and, with the traffic at a stand-still, the driver proposes a solution. She agrees, but as a result of her actions starts to feel increasingly detached from the real world. She has been on a top-secret mission, and her next job will lead her to encounter the apparently superhuman founder of a religious cult.
Meanwhile, Tengo is leading a nondescript life but wishes to become a writer. He inadvertently becomes involved in a strange affair surrounding a literary prize to which a mysterious seventeen-year-old girl has submitted her remarkable first novel. It seems to be based on her own experiences and moves readers in unusual ways. Can her story really be true?
Both Aomame and Tengo notice that the world has grown strange; both realise that they are indispensable to each other. While their stories influence one another, at times by accident and at times intentionally, the two come closer and closer to intertwining.

This excerpt (page 715) just about sums it up. I waded through this incredibly wordy and mundane set of 2 books but never got the meaning of Murakami's surreal alternate world and bizarre plot lines. It's probably too surreal for me as I'm a very down-to-earth kind of girl. However, I note on the Internet that attempts at explanations are even more bizarre and a lot of other readers didn't "get it" either....
In any case, 800 pages is too long for the plot. Not very much happens and too much emphasis is put on mundane actions. There are too many repetitions. Didn't this novel benefit from any editing, I wonder?
There remains Murakami's (or his translator's?) addictive writing. It has been said by Grace Jung that "people are drawn to Murakami’s writing because he focuses on loneliness and isolation and how an unfulfilled desire for connection and love drives people to various forms of psychosis" and I think that's probably the novel's main attraction.
So, a pleasant read, though lengthy and frustrating; and at this point, I think I will probably read the last opus of the trilogy, but not yet!
As for the story, I've only started reading it, so I can't really judge it. A lot of the reviews were saying that nothing happens in it, but so far, after only a hundred pages, I am into the story and I feel like "something is happening". I'll see in the future and come back to edit my comment if I change my mind.
Let's start book 3 without delay. I know what is going to happen but a second reading give more pleasure with the details.
