La qualité du SACD se fait bien sentir tout de suite sur cet enregistrement ;

I can clearly remember when this great album was released way back in 1981. ( Ah 1981: Billy Squier Don't Say No, Van Halen Fair Warning, Rush Moving Pictures, BOC Fire Of Unknown Origin, Def Leppard High N Dry etc., etc.) Foreigner jettisoned 2 members & became a four piece. I really loved their debut album but was concerned that maybe Mick & Lou had started to lose their way but as soon as I heard Juke Box Hero on the radio a few times I had a sense that this album was going to be really big so I rushed out to the record store (remember those??) & picked up a copy of F4 & immediately threw it on my turntable & played it through completely twice. Excellent, I thought, the boys have returned to form with Mutt Lange at the mixing desk. Good hard rock, hooks galore with just one monster ballad thrown in for the ladies, what more could a Foreigner fan ask for. This was Mutt's golden era where everything he tweaked the knobs on went immediately platinum (AC/DC, Def Leppard, The Cars) & F4 would prove to be no exception. Still cashing all those royalty checks Mutt??
Flash forward to 2013 & I still love this album, I never tire of it, I must hear F4 at least once a week. Mobile Fidelity has been slowly releasing sacd titles of the first 4 Foreigner albums so as I own an Oppo 95 & 105 I was salivating at the prospect of hearing F4 on sacd. After what seemed like eternity while MF released numerous titles on sacd (SRV, Billy Joel) my patience was finally rewarded & I now own one of my favorite desert island classics on sacd. What a treat! Mutt should be proud as the transfer is magical & almost analogue. Great separation between instruments, its almost as if I'm right in the studio with the boys listening to a playback. The drums are really brought to life & I doubt it can ever get any better than this. Memories of rocking out with the guys, slow dancing with the girls to WFAGLY at the high school dances filled my head as I was seemingly transported back in time to 1981 as I listened on headphones, sound cranked, eyes closed. Kudos to MF, this is probably as close to traveling back in time as I will ever get but whenever I long for 1981 I just reach for my F4 sacd & my journey begins! Sadly this was the beginning of the end of an era, foolishly Mick & Lou thought that they could do it again without Mutt ( maybe Mutt wanted more points or was just too busy - who knows) & Foreigner eschewed the hard rock for a more AOR ballad driven sound (how did that work out for you boys?). All I can say is that this is the way music is meant to heard, when listening to a complete album start to finish really left a mark on one's conscience. Releases like F4 only come around once or twice in a lifetime, this album really stands the test of time & this MF version is the one to own IMHO, no 5.1 just great stereo sound as it was meant to be heard. All of MF's Foreigner sacds are excellent, but start with the debut & F4 & go from there, you will not be disappointed! ROCK ON!!!

The album means a lot to me since it was the soundtrack of those honeymoon days--and nights-- in Alaska, so I'm a bit overly nostalgic about the soundtrack. Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs has hit this one out of the park. As far as remastering goes, it sounds great to these old ears, better than it's ever sounded. I'll let someone else talk about the diagrams and peaks and valleys, I'm too right brained to go into that detail.

Again, one of the biggest things I like about any disc is the stuff included with the music. This has the stuff you like to hold in your hands when you've put the music on. A 22 page booklet with credits, musicians, and lyrics make it a satisfying experience. It's one of the reasons I don't like digital downloads. You only get the music, nothing else. Old school to the end, I have to have the lyrics and notes just like they included in most of the albums back in the seventies, and in this case, the eighties.

Highly recommended. You know the album. MFSL Hybrid SACD refreshes it and makes it even better than before.

Whittled down to a four piece, Foreigner produced their best selling album with "4". Featuring support from a then unknown Thomas Dolby playing sythesizers, "4" managed to stay on top of the top of the charts due to two key singles--the sax based "Urgent" with some terrific playing by Junior Walker and "Waiting For A Girl Like You" featuring Dolby providing an atmospheric backing track for singer Lou Gramm.

There have been at least four (possibly five) masterings of this terrific album. The last had bonus tracks and a mastering that was compressed and lacked the dynamics that made the album so memorable. The best mastering of the album remains the SACD put out by Mobile Fidelty. The CD layers sounds nice--natural and open while the SACD provides additional depth and detail that were lost with the earlier CD masterings (while the later CD masterings lacked the full dynamics of the orginal recording).

A couple of minor issues (for me): I would like to see Mobile Fidelity add singles and b-sides to vintage albums like this as many times those songs are or near the quality of the recorded albums. It would make a nice plus to include all of the tracks that were released at the time and would result in fans not having to keep multiple copies of an album. I realize that MF tries to be true to the original LP in terms of content but it would provide added value for fans as well.

The mini-LP sleeve is on thick cardboard stock and a gatefold (unlike the original album). While I'm not a huge fan of the mini-LP packaging that Mobile Fidelity has gone, it do es result in a thinner and less space consuming holder for the album.

Although Foreigner were never lyrically deep as a band, the words were serviceable to the hard rock music provided by Mick Jones. This release stands as one of their best and most consistent albums as well a terrific sounding one with this MF release.

Technically, this SACD is among the hardest to listen too out of the 40 or so SACD recordings that I own. In my listening room this CD has a very harsh upper midrange and lacks that clear treble sizzle when appropriate. To me, this SACDs sound quality rivals that of many red book recordings that are good only for back ground music. The only positive attribute I can find is that the base comes thru with great punch and decent extension. I can hear distinct bass guitar and feel the punch from percussion in the pit of my stomach. The fact that this is a stereo only recording has no bearing on the sound quality-I have many stellar stereo only SACD recordings such as Chicago Transit Authority or Steely Dan's Aja. I give the sound quality a two and add third star for the solid content this album contains.
