Interesting that for such a seminal event in U.S. history, there aren't many books about the Iranian hostage crisis, although there is no shortage of books about Iran itself and the 1979 revolution.

Before the (much better) Guests of the Ayatollah: The Iran Hostage Crisis: The First Battle in America's War with Militant Islam came out, this was one of the only books out there covering only the hostage crisis. It's long been out of print. As far as I know, it was never issued in paperback.

It's very readable, but you should know that, unlike Bowden's book (which is a conventional narrative), Wells's account is written in the style of Glory Denied: The Saga of Jim Thompson, America's Longest-Held Prisoner of War: one direct quote after another collated from after-the-fact interviews with the participants, with no expository text interlarded.

It's readable, but at 400+ pages, it does get trying, and you find yourself thirsting for a more straightforward approach. I would go for Bowden's book, which also has the advantage of incorporating recent revelations about the episode. This one is from 1985.

444 Days is a very interesting book because the author spends very little time explain what happened and quotes the hostages extensively. The result is a collection of quotes from many of the participants presented with commentary by the author to provide structure.

I really liked this book because of its easy reading and format. It did provide a much greater perspective of the hostage situation at the embassy. How they were treated, why they were moved, how some of them escaped through the Canadian embassy, etc. It also provides keen insight on what it takes for a person to be taken hostage for such a period of time and remain mentally as intact as possible.

The book also answered some personal questions I had about the extent of some people who were involved with the take over and how they performed under the tremendous stress of the situation.

This book makes an excellent companion to Col. Scott's book Pieces of the Game.

Wells does a very good job of weaving the experiences of multiple hostages in chronological order. You'll learn that not all the hostages were treated as well as some of the others. Any student of this moment in history will find valuable information within. The accounts of life (if you can call it that) after the rescue attempt, illustrate just how ill prepared the students were with "keeping" 52 Americans as political pets for a year and a half.

444 Days interviews the hostages and retells the story of their horrific nightmare through a compilation of interviews. This was the first book I read on this subject that had a personal, not political perspective and it made for an addictive book. I highly recommend this book instead of or in addition to a book that focuses exclusively on the mission to bring them home.
