5.0 étoiles sur 5 What You Should Know About Writing to Write Harder 28 avril 2014

On September 30, 2011, I wrote what has easily been my most popular review on The Chuck's "250 Things You Should Know About Writing." I said that it pulled me out of my funk and helped me break a downward cycle I'd been in. Okay, I also discussed manufacturing bio-toxins, BUT THAT WAS JUST A METAPHOR FOR SOMETHING, I SWEAR! (*waves at NSA*)

Since then, I have completed my novel and it won a damn decent award. It is sitting on several agent desks seeing if it has what it takes to go to the next level.

Now, no writing guide will produce the manuscript for you [*edited after receiving agent email* *headdesk* *swan dive into cupcake box*] and no writing guide will fix the manuscript for you. As The Chuck repeats over and over: talking and reading about writing is not writing. I guess reviewing writing guides really isn't writing either, but what the hell, it's dinner time. Writing guides won't freshen your breath or make your laundry white either, but they damn skippy have value.

What a writing guide like "500 Ways to Write Harder" does is motivate and help me over the rough times. Write Harder gives a fresh perspective and a take-no-prisoners approach that is good for self-examination and honest laugh-out-loud moments in public places that are getting harder and harder to explain. My therapist and I are working on that.

Now, the obligatory disclaimer. There will be one-star reviews decrying vulgarity, foulness, obscenity, and generally naughty language and innuendo. You speshul snowflakes just need to bite me. Go ahead, bite me. Do it now and get it out of your system.

Distilled from the font of dubious writing advice, Terribleminds, this ebook is a worthy addition to your collection. Chuck sorts through all the posts for his infamous "25" lists, so you don't have to. Support the blog and learn a damn thing or two or five hundred. Go on, I'll wait.

I read only half of the "Look Inside" feature and, of course intend to order the book. About the language: if you are offended easily (or at all, really) by crude language, then either don't get the book, or get it and set your filter to glean the good advice and skim off/dump the sludge ... a few (or a lot of) bad words won't kill you, so get over it.

I am not by any means a professional writer - I don't even blog (regularly) - but I retired as a technical editor and I still am responsible for an insignificant monthly newsletter for which I review and edit contributions. I know that I CAN write fairly well and that I SHOULD write more, toward which end I am happy to have found this and a few other helpful writing advice books. So far, however, I am doing more reading about writing than actually writing, but that will change soon. I hope.

What I want to say about even the very small portion of this book available just in the "Look Inside" feature is that every point this man makes is a gem and absolutely spot on. I HAVE WORKED with writers that pull all of the hare-brained wrong things to do mentioned in this book - and anyone who does want to write harder should keep on doing things - such as ignoring assignments, submission guidelines, deadlines, helpful critiques, your target audience, etc., etc., etc.

Far as I'm concerned, this book is bloody brilliant. When I have actually read more of it, I might be back to add the fifth star.

This is an excellent motivator, an even better tool, and an all -around on-going badass presentation of just how useful Chuck Wendig's advice can be for writers new and old. Be sure to snatch up his other collections (500 Ways to be a Better Writer, 500 Ways to Tell a Better Story, and others).

Chuck Wendig is a prolific writer. I'm enjoying his novels very much and looking forward to reading more of his work. His books on writing are inspirational. He doesn't pull any punches and if you're like me you'll see yourself in his words and kick your own butt right along with him. He has an amazing way of cutting through the crap and breaking his lessons down so that anyone, except maybe someone that is squeamish about cursing lol, can benefit from his advice. Thank you Chuck.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another excellent Wendig collection of lists in his essential series 16 août 2014

One of many in a series of thoughts on writing in multiple list format by Chuck Wendig - a diverse author of games (table and video), novels, short stories and how-to books on writing. His blog is where these thoughts are often first expressed, but even if you read some of them there first, he always adds new information, thoughts, entirely new lists, links and other reasons to buy them and still be worthwhile, as he did with this book.

If you're at all interested in writing, publishing (self v traditional are both discussed) or other aspects of the craft, this book is excellent and very reasonably priced. As with his similar books on sale on Amazon, I feel like I always get some great tips and even inspired to write while reading them and highly recommend this book and his others in his series.
