5.0 étoiles sur 5 Abra Kadavar + bonus track + live CD = awesome 14 mai 2014
Par Geo981010 - Publié sur
Kadavar is a guitar/bass/drum trio that avoids all the Danger Mouse overproduction nonsense that is too common in music nowadays, and instead delivers 3 talented musicians playing their own brand of fast riffy rock and roll. As the cd notes state, "the music you can on this album was played and recorded live in one room with amplifiers turned on loud", so this is really what they sound like and not some bunch of Garageband hacks. Abra is a little less late 60 psychedelic than their first album and a bit more early 70s hard rock, but is still features lots of riffs + guitar solos + a killer rhythm section. The original Abra Kadavar album was my favorite hard rock album from 2013, and the tour edition adds to this by including a bonus studio track "The Man I Shot" from the split LP "White Ring" that fits in well.

The Tour Edition also includes a second CD with an entire live concert from November 2013. The concert includes 3 tracks from Abra, another song "Broken Wings" (from White Ring), and all the tracks from the first album including the bonus track "Living in your Head" (b side to Creature of the Demon). I think I prefer the live versions here to the studio versions, but I am glad to have both. Like their studio albums, no studio trickery and what you hear is what the crowd heard. The live CD features their new bassist Simon Dragon Bouteloup who played rhythm guitar on the last two tracks of Abra Kadavar (Rhythm for Endless Minds + the title track), and a theremin player for Purple Sage.

So the CDs are worth it even if you already have the vanilla version of the album, and is a must have for fans of real rock. Rock on!

01 Come Back Life
02 Doomsday Machine
03 Eye of the Storm

09 Abra Kadabra
10 The Man I Shot

04 Black Sun
05 Eye Of The Storm

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great album, extra track plus live CD = a must have 28 mai 2014

Kadavar is a great band whether it is in the studio or live, what you hear is what you get.

I will not go into details about every song since you can probably preview every track on the internet but I have to say that these guys don't have a bad song. Definitely worth checking them out if you haven't.

So far I only had their material on vinyl and right before I was going to buy the CD versions I learned of this release while chatting with the band at one of their shows so I went with this option since it is a great value. I plan to buy the vinyl version of Live in Antwerp.

The only disappointment about this release is that the live CD is LOUD, to the point of clipping and offering little perceived dynamic range. Absolutely nothing against their live performance since like I said this band is the real deal live but the mixing, mastering and overall recording level of the live CD are kind of slammed. This band sounds great live but to me the production (not the music) in the live CD falls a bit short. When I downloaded the live CD into my computer using iTunes I adjusted the overall volume so when I use the shuffle feature the volume level remains the same.

Still a CD worth buying. I am hoping the vinyl version has been mixed and mastered at a lower recording level.

Get this double album, you'll be glad you did.

This is a great companion to abra kadavar. I haven't had the opportunity to see them live in person, so I really enjoyed hearing what they sound like live, which was really good. Only reason this doesn't get five stars from me is because I philosophically don't like the record companies' strategy of releasing these special additions after the initial release to get you to buy the album twice.

Excellent live album. If you saw them at Psycho de Mayo, then you know what I'm talking about. Highly recommended.
Best trio on the planet, them and Yob.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Get "Abra Kadavar" and "Live in Antwerp"--Two Albums for the Price of One!! 27 octobre 2015
Par Kirk A. Gauthier - Publié sur
Kadavar are something of a quandary. To look at the band members and to listen to their music, you'd think they just stepped out of a time machine or thawed from a deep freeze. Their sound and style is so authentically early-'70s psychedelic rock/heavy metal, you would think these guys were roadies for Black Sabbath back before they recorded their first album. And yet these guys started playing together as early as 2010, a shock to the production-heavy music industry of the 21st Century.

Not as heavy as their self-titled debut, "Abra Kadavar" focuses more heavily on the band's psychedelic influences as opposed to their obvious heavy metal influences. Eschewing the longer, slower, heavier riffs from their first album for shorter, tighter songs, "Abra Kadavar" is the equivalent to Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" in terms of structure and approach. Regardless, this album is leaps and bounds above just about everything else coming out. These guys are seriously in a completely different category than the rest.

The true surprise that comes with this album, though, is the bonus disc: "Live in Antwerp," the band's first official live album and the first to fully feature new bassist Simon "Dragon" Bouteloup. Dipping into both their self-titled album and "Abra Kadavar," the album features the band's debut LP in its entirety (including the bonus track "Living in Your Head") and three songs from "Abra Kadavar": "Come Back Life," "Doomsday Machine," and "Eye of the Storm." Also included is the previously-unreleased "Broken Wings," a song surprisingly not included on their most recent album, 2015's "Berlin." What is most interesting about "Live in Antwerp" is that it feels like any of their other studio recordings; the band purposely record their vocals, guitar, bass, and drums to simulate the sound and feel of a live concert, and the proof of that is right here.

If you are not yet familiar with Kadavar, do yourself a favor and pick up the tour edition of "Abra Kadavar." You will in no way regret the purchase, and you'll be rocking out to both discs for weeks on end. Just be mindful to not headbang so hard you hurt yourself!
