The hardest thing about going with the 12" Macbook with its single USB-C connector was knowing I had to leave my Apple 27" Thunderbolt display behind. For the last 8 months I have lived with apples USB-C to HDMI/power/USB dongle. Only one connection (better than docking the thunderbolt AND power connectors on my old thunderbolt display) BUT stuck at the HDMI 1080p resolution.
I watched for a display port based dongle with charging for months and it didn't come.
A USB-C monitor solves the problem!
I plugged a USB3 hub into the back of this display for my keyboard (with extended keypad) and USB3 gigabit ethernet adapter and USB3 backup disk. Finally I have all my peripherals, and charging, and 2560x1440 with a single connector. Life is good again. In fact better.
The display is awesome out of the box - no color correction needed. Large, sharp, clear, vibrant. Feels like my old thunderbolt display. The stand is gold anodized aluminum and the back is attractive white plastic. Its not quite stylish enough to be mistaken for an apple product but its attractive enough. Overall, its a decent replacement for my other display that cost twice as much...
If you have a 12" macbook and miss docking it to a 27" display like you did your Macbook Pro, just get this. You won't be disappointed.
Nice job, Acer!
Great screen, USB-C works well with my Retina Macbook 12-inch and the USB hub supports 3.0/3.1 (I *think* as my backup drive is going same speed as when hooked up directly). The gold pieces match my Gold laptop perfectly and are actual aluminum - a nice touch!
It arrived in a smaller package than expected and is actually quite light. I do recommend using a large flathead screwdriver on the two stand pieces you have to assemble instead of the thumb grip - it is much more stable that way.
NOTE FOR USB-C MACBOOK / MACBOOK PRO OWNERS: Previously there was an issue where the screen would blank. That has been resolved with the latest updates to MacOS.
Four stars due to the lack of heigh adjustment (I got a small stand for it to raise it up enough). Outside that, an excellent buy.
Picture is very good, especially after doing color calibration via OSX, but I wouldn't call it great. The matte surface is good for reducing glare, but I can't help but wonder if the picture would look a bit sharper with a glossy glass surface. It runs at the full 60Hz, and can also run at 720p for the HiDPI/Retina look. However, the difference between the MacBook's Retina screen and the Acer running at the normal 1x is minimal from a normal usage distance, and there are advantages in my work to having both types of screens, so nothing about that difference bothers me.
I happen to like the aesthetics of the white+gold and the stand, which serves as a handy spot to corral items like earbuds and a USB 3.0 hub, but I can certainly understand that it's not to everyone's taste. The monitor is not physically adjustable in any way and is not VESA-compliant, so if that's important to you/your setup, definitely don't buy this. I don't think it's particularly flimsy - I have it on an adjustable standing desk and it doesn't jiggle any more than anything else when moving around.
The on-board speakers are terrible, both in quality and control, and honestly would probably have been better left out. They are only adjustable via the monitor control, not the system. They are especially frustrating if you plug the monitor in after you plug in headphones/other speakers, because they'll then take over as the audio out device. I haven't found any way to disable them, either on the monitor or in OSX itself. If I do, I'll be much happier about that.
I also have the flickering issue mentioned by another reviewer - it does indeed seem to be an Apple issue of some sort, as it resolves after a restart. I tend to move to and from my desk a lot, so while restarting is quite fast, it becomes very annoying to have to have to boot other environments and restore various connections (I'm a web developer). For now, I am holding out hope that an update will eventually fix it.
Finally, I am actually on my second one of these - the USB ports on my first one died after about 5 weeks, right outside of the Amazon return window. I sent it off for an Acer warranty repair, but something happened with the shipping labels and it ended up back at Amazon's warehouse and I got sent a new one as a replacement after a quick email to customer service, which was very kind of them. Who knows how long warranty repair would have taken or what kind of runaround I would have gotten from Acer, so I'm also thankful I got this through Amazon rather than somewhere else.
Update: I was able to connect my 2017 MBP to the LG 5K monitor over USB-C, so at least something is working on the MBP on USB-C. I tried Acer support, including getting escalated, but they won't commit to anything. They say they can't really do anything about it. They claim compatibility is solely up to the computer manufacturer and couldn't they would to anything to work on it. It's a shame. It's otherwise a nice monitor but if the main selling point of USB-C doesn't work and they won't try to fix it, then it's not worth much. I revised my rating down to 1 star.
Update 2: I've given up and returned this. I can't get any support out of Acer. Apple has tried but nothing so far. The thing that makes me very wary of this product is the unwillingness of Acer to troubleshoot it seriously in a timely fashion. So maybe this gets resolved for the MBP 2017 eventually, what if I buy a new computer that doesn't work? I may be stuck.
