Présentation de l'éditeur

For someone who doesn’t need to follow a strict gluten free diet (or care for someone who does) it can be a difficult diet to understand. After all, the word “diet” usually means “cheat a little.” For a person with celiac, 100% adherence is very important. Yes, a crumb can make a difference. And this is the purpose of this “children’s” book, to help the important adults in the lives of gluten free children understand what gluten is, and to see that students and grandchildren who need to be gluten free don’t want to be left out of food related celebrations, even if it means eating something different. ‘Adam’s Gluten Free Surprise: Helping Others Understand Gluten Free’ (and the identical girls’ version, ‘Hailey’s Gluten Free Surprise’) follows Adam through his first six months of a new school year after being diagnosed with celiac disease. He is very accepting of his medically required diet, offering a, “that’s OK,” when he cannot be included in a special treat that his peers can enjoy. But his good nature, which offers children with special diets a positive role model, turns sad at times, as is only natural when a person feels left out, or when they cannot eat something that looks and smells good. In the end, Adam’s teacher and peers understand a bit more about gluten. They secretly plan to make their Valentine’s Day party completely gluten free so he can be included. While this certainly won’t happen in every classroom, the purpose of this story is to help promote empathy and understanding. ‘Adam’s Gluten Free Surprise’ is about the acceptance that is required by the child with a special diet and it is about the understanding that is required by those who are important parts of his or her life. *Teachers, if one of your students requires a gluten free diet, please ask him or her first before reading this book to the entire class. While some children are thrilled to share a book that is about themselves, some children don’t want to be the focus. But please do read it for yourself; your understanding of gluten free is very important. --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Broché .

Biographie de l'auteur

Debbie has been involved in celiac awareness and support since she discovered that she needed to be gluten free in 2000. Her desire to increase celiac awareness and an understanding of a gluten free diet led to 'Adam’s Gluten Free Surprise: Helping Others Understand Gluten Free,' her first children's book. Her inspiration for Adam was her children who supported and accepted a gluten free kitchen because their mom’s health depended on it. She was inspired by her son’s positive matter-of-fact attitude when it was discovered that he also required a gluten free diet. He faced each school and social event with an inspiringly positive acceptance. Debbie is passionate about the testing of children, and anyone who may have health issues related to undiagnosed celiac, a disease that affects nearly 1% of us. She hopes to ease the path for those who require a gluten free diet with her books 'Adam's Gluten Free Surprise' and 'Hailey’s Gluten Free Surprise.' She also wrote, 'The Syrup Maze: An Inspirational Journey Through Recovery From a Traumatic Brain Injury,' about her son after an auto accident in 2012. Included is the struggle they faced in the hospital and in rehab with safe and appropriate gluten free food for her son who has nonceliac gluten sensitivity. Change is needed. My six year old is GF and she felt it was fun to read a book about "someone like her". It was a good story to help understand exactly how forward thinking a person with Celiac has to be. I think Adam knew more than I did about it what was appropriate for him to eat, and what wasn't. It did make me think about the other children at school and what they need to go through. I think as a parent it will help me to be more aware and more sensitive to people with Celiac. It was a very educational book, and I loved Adam's positive attitude throughout!

This is a wonderful book for both children and adults on the awareness of a gluten free diet. The book is easy to read, entertaining and educational. I would recommend it to anyone with a child on a gluten free diet or for parents, grandparents, baby sitters, teachers etc. for an easy understanding of the diet.

This book shares the struggles of a little boy with celiac disease named Adam. His classroom is "typical" in the sense that parents and teachers provide treats on a regular basis, i.e. ice cream cones and pizza parties. As the school year progresses, Adam's teacher and classmates gain a better understanding of what it means to have celiac disease and live gluten free. There is a great surprise at the end which I will not ruin for you!

"Adam's Gluten Free Surprise" is a excellent book to read to any child with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, and/or other food allergies. It is also an important read for any child who would benefit from having a better understanding of food allergies and intolerances, especially siblings and classmates of such children.

After we were finished with this book, my first grader and I had a nice discussion about all of the kids in her classroom who have food allergies. My preschoolers both gained a better understanding of celiac disease and why I have to be so careful to avoid foods with gluten. They asked me multiple times if I ever get sad like Adam does about not being able to eat "gluten foods" anymore...

This is a fabulous book and I am grateful to have recently discovered it. I highly recommend it!

HASH(0x8f230d74) étoiles sur 5 A must have for anyone who has a child with Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerance!! 9 juin 2011

OK, so our book came today. I LOVE it! This a must have book for anyone who has a child with Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance. It is so helpful in explaining how important it is to be careful. It is also wonderful in that it shows Adam as an empowered child, who is not living a terrible live just because he can not eat what everyone else is eating! This is they way I am raising my daughter. To be a proud, healthy and a happy child!! And at 3 1/2, she is amazing!

It actually brought tears to my eyes when they were doing the party. It worries me so much how Abigail, and to some extent others, will act when they learn how careful they need to be. Abigail knows to be careful, but she is a kid, and kids make mistakes. I often worry about how hard it will be for her at school. This is such a great book. I can not wait to read it to her and Connor at bedtime. And I can not wait to send it to school with her in the fall. It is really an informative book. I know it will help not only the other kids, but the teachers and staff as well! Thank you!!!! ~Cherie
