Jasmine awoke with a start. She wasn't sure what had woken her, so she held her breath and listened carefully. A few moments later, she heard it. A cracking noise. There it was again. "Norik?" she called out quietly.

When he didn't reply, Jasmine climbed down from her bunk, her blanket wrapped tightly around her. "Norik?" she tried again. Jasmine didn't want to get too close in case he flipped out and tried to smoosh her into the deck again. Two more somethings cracked. "Norik!" she hissed.

"Hmm?" he murmured.

"There's a noise," she whispered to him, and edged closer when it looked as if he wasn't going to fly into attack mode.

"What noise?" he asked, and listened. When he didn't hear anything, he told her, "Everyone is dead, go back to sleep."

She opened her mouth, stunned as he turned his back to her. The noise was a little louder this time and she exclaimed, "That noise!"

Norik looked over his bad shoulder at her and said, "It is the hull contracting as the inside of the ship cools down to meet the temperature outside."

"Oh," she said, and then when the reality of what he said settled in, she jumped forward and clutched at his arm. "What? The outside? The outside is space!"

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Adrift (Callisto Series - Book 1) 22 novembre 2013

The plot was interesting, the characters were well fleshed out, the book was well edited and the pace was just right. There were no cliff hangers and the love interest has their HEA. . . Although for awhile you wonder if that will ever happen.

With that all said the length of this novella means the story could have been fleshed out more with a satisfactory conclusion on the genetic experiments. We know the people behind that were taken out but I'm sure there's children out there already 'in the system', being trained to kill. Taking out the top guys doesn't mean the mad scientist isn't still out there, experimenting and causing mayhem. The relationship between the H & h needs a bit more maturing, too -- To know their relationship will work beyond surviving against all odds. -- Dan's Wife

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Fast paced romance set against an unforgiving science fiction frontier... 19 juin 2011

I like it. At first glance, it is a story of an intelligent, crafty, headstrong woman with a rapier wit and sharper tongue meets tall, dark, and handsome who has serious girl issues and a strong left cross. Jasmine is engaging and insufferable while Norik is tenacious and unforgiving. Immersed in the depths of space, a chance encounter becomes a fight for survival. Everything seems to spin out of control and all they can do is trust in each other. This story comes at you fast and makes for a quick, good read, which makes you wonder what will happen to them next. If you are in for a different kind of romance, this one set against the backdrop of space, Callisto Adrift will do nicely.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Amusing adventure/romance. A fun escape. 21 novembre 2013

This was a quick, fun story. It's worth a read just for the banter, which made me smile and laugh numerous times. Conroy has poured all of her character development into the H/h. The secondary characters aren't developed and the villain is a cartoon, but the leads have the complexity and humanity that comes from balancing strengths with vulnerabilities. Jasmine is impetuous and forward, but also quick, cute, funny, loving and compassionate. Norik is smart and capable, with a strong sense of integrity and a wry sense of humor, but he's also lonely and a bit awkward with women. Each is a great foil for the other.

The story premise is OK, and the pacing is good. There are some silly implausibilities but, from the beginning, one knows not to take the story too seriously. There are few grammatical errors. It's all in fun and highly recommended, especially if you can pick it up while it's free.

Do you like your damsels to watch nervously through thick lashes as the hero sweeps her off her feet and whisks her away from evil doers, intent on doing bad things, because she's too shy and innocent to defend herself? Then Jasmine will be more than happy to disappoint you. This is one investigative journalist who knows how to look after herself. At least until her current job took a slightly unexpected turn.

Enter the hero.

Dashing, smart, brave, and self loathing... that's right; Norik doesn't like to subscribe to the normal stereotypes any more than the annoying woman he's forced to share a room with on the trip back to his ship, the Callisto. All he wants is to be left alone to brood until he can get back to commanding his crew. However Norik will soon discover that this trip will be anything but peaceful. And not just because Jasmine can't keep her nose out of his private life.

For a first time author Erica Conroy has delivered exactly what she promised with the tagline; `Hearts will ache and heads will roll...' Norik is haunted by his past and tries to keep Jasmine from getting passed his emotional walls with almost as much determination as he fights to keep them both alive, and Jasmine discovers a genuine desire to help that somewhat overrides her natural tendency to do whatever it takes to find the truth of a subject. Through their shared ordeal they both learn to open up and let someone see the people behind the mask their jobs require. Even the secondary characters, specifically the crew of the Callisto, have a richness that makes you truly believe they are a crew who have been through many adventures together before we've come across them.

Callisto: Adrift has left me wanting more. More banter. More danger. More heads rolling. But most importantly, more adventures of the Callisto crew!

If you know classic Star Trek then you'll see a little parallel here and there but it's fine. It makes the characters more familiar if you don't dwell on it. The story holds its own and is entertaining enough to keep you moving along at a good pace. Best of all the author doesn't try to stretch situations out to try and pad the content. Bad guy taken care of reasonably, not an out of control super villain. All is realistic enough to not have you second guessing things or shaking your head in disbelief. Like I said. Well done.
