HASH(0x8ea107e0) étoiles sur 5 Quite possibly their finest hour. 24 janvier 2013
Par PeaceSells215 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This teutonic thrash trio (say that fast five times in a row) have released some great albums in their time. In my opinion, Agent Orange is their finest hour. Released in 1989 this treasure of brutality and thrash must not be forgotten. If you are looking for brutal vocals, carnage, war, killer drums, and heavy guitar work, you have come to the right place. The first track and the title track Agent Orange starts off strong, then goes into a similar riff used in Megadeth's "In My Darkest Hour" This track blazes with a crazy solo from Frank Blackfire. And ends with the simple but brutal line "Agent Orange, Burn." As a three man band these guys really showed up on this album. Next is Tired And Red, right from the start you know it is intense thrash metal at its best. The drums are killer and Tom's voice is brutal as ever. The change of pace at the 2 minute mark is interesting and adds to overall feeling of this album, then the song builds steam again and kicks it back into overdrive. Blackfire's solo is possibly one of my favorites off the album. Incest, a brutal track and sort of disgusting but its not my favorite. Remember The Fallen has the distinctive German sound. The guitar is as heavy as ever on this track and the drumming is really precise. Its one of my favorite mid-pace thrashers of all time. Magic Dragon is the fifth track and even though we are more than halfway done with this album the guys still haven't let up. This is another powerful mid-pace thrasher about the AC-47, the famous gunship that rained hell from the heavens on the Viet Cong in Vietnam. Around the 2 minute mark it becomes an all out thrasher. The riffs in this track are my favorite off the whole album. Next is Exhibition Bout and this track is what, to me, seperated this band from the others in Germany and around the world. This track covers the battle between a bull and a matador, the fact the band took a stance against this act of violence between man and beast for entertainment is really interesting. Ausgebombt is a really fast track and it sounds like it is a Motorhead inspired track, really like the gang vocal shout. Track 8 is Baptism Of Fire, Chris has a really great showing on the drums here. The guitar starts this killer riff followed by intensity and Tom's brutal vocals as always. The chorus is incredibly catchy. Now I'm not sure if everyone has the track "Don't Walk Away." But I have it one mine, and this is one of my favorite covers the band has ever done. And actually, its one of my favorite covers a thrash band has ever done. Overall, if you like thrash or any type of metal I assure you, this album will not dissapoint.
"Pros"
Killer vocals.
Brutal musicianship from the guitars and drums.
Riffs and solos are some of the best.
"Cons"
The album is short (need more!!)

HASH(0x8ea10c6c) étoiles sur 5 Sodom - "Agent Orange" (1989) 28 février 2014
Par Head of Metal - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Having established itself as one of the leading lights of the Teutonic thrash subgenre of metal, Sodom was nevertheless still lacking in commercial success. Extreme metal fans, especially in continental Europe, were already absorbing (and continue to be inspired by) the proto-black metal themes and forays into thrash that marked Sodom's earliest days. The problem is that it's hard to sustain the development of a metal band while you're also working as a locksmith in a coal mine, as Tom "Angelripper" was at the time. He and his two friends needed to escape that life to make Sodom reach its full potential.

That escape became possible with the 1989 release of "Agent Orange," a delightfully loud record about the ravages of the Vietnam War.

"Agent Orange" has a strong underground edge that is carefully balanced by a booming production suitable for a more commercially successful band. Same for the album art: done by Andreas Marschall, a group of gunners opens fire on the treacherous jungle below them, like a video game poster.

The furious, high-speed thrash serves as a template for Angelripper's fascination with the Vietnam War--from the lethal titular "Agent Orange" ("the fire that doesn't burn!"), the mid-tempo "Remember the Fallen" (in which he channels the snarl of Dave Mustaine, to my ears), and "Magic Dragon" (which is about carpet-bombing).

But the capstone is the signature song that Sodom had lacked up to this point: the mighty "Ausgebombt." Often played live in conjunction with "Ace of Spades" (which it resembles), "Ausgebombt" is three minutes of glorious, catchy speed. The buildup to the chorus ("No trade with death, no trade with arms, dispense the war, learn from the past") is a reminder that for all the focus on the carnage and destruction of Vietnam, Sodom is conveying a deeply anti-war message. And the live version from "One Night In Bangkok" is even faster than the studio version, if that was possible!

With 100,000 units sold in Germany alone, "Agent Orange" deserves to be heard by so many more. And its success would enable a grateful Tom Angelripper to finally quit his job at the coal mines to pursue metal full-time.

He writes in thanks: "It's plaintive that Chris Witchunter can't commemorate this 20th anniversary of Agent Orange's first release with us. May he find his place and his merited peace in rock and roll heaven. Hiya Chris, I drink a beer to you!"

It is one special beer raised in remembrance, to complement the innumerable beers hoisted for Sodom over the years.

First things first, I received Agent Orange by Sodom promptly and in great condition. The packaging of this dual cd disk digipak is very cool, with bullet belt like fences. Yes, the artwork and layout is top notch.
This is my second Sodom album, having received my first, 1987's seminal Persecution Mania, a week or two ago. I can't decide just yet which one I think is better. Gun to my head, I suppose Persecution Mania, but this is some great, killer Thrash, too. It's raw, especially for a third full length, but it exudes attitude, blood, guts and sweat, not to mention artillery grease. Ausgebombt is a standout track, along with Baptism Of Fire.
This album reminds me of the perfect marriage of Bomber/Iron Fist era MotorHead with Beneath The Remains era Sepultura. If you love Beneath The Remains and early MotorHead, you are pretty much guaranteed to fall in love with this, Agent Orange. And now, I'd say it's high time to get back to my frenzied head banging and destroying this room!!!
Ok, I've given this disk a few more listens, and I gotta say, it is awesome. I think this is actually better than Persecution Mania. This has got to be the best Thrash album of 1989. OverKill's Years Of Decay is better on a personal level, for me. But as far as fast, heavy and BRUTAL Thrash metal goes, this one takes the title belt. I stand by my Sepultura, Beneath The Remains comparison, another seminal Thrash album from 1989 that straddles the line between Thrash and Death. I'll take Agent Orange over Kreator's Extreme Aggression and/or Coma Of Souls any day. Agent Orange is on par with Kreator's Terrible Certainty. This album is just so raw and heavy. I'm gushing. This is love at first ear bleed.
Now I just got to get 1992's Tapping The Vein, which I hear blurs the line between Thrash and Death. Now that's the line I wanna live on!
In conclusion: get this album. It represents Sodom very well, and is probably their best!
