Présentation de l'éditeur

Imagine being on the radio and hanging out with some of the biggest music stars of the day while you're still in high school. Think how it might be to work with the entertainment industry people you had admired the most, before your 21st birthday. Picture going on the air in major five major cities, including Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, before age 24. In "Aircheck: Life in Music Radio," J.J. Johnson takes the reader into the radio stations, the recording studios, the parties and the Hollywood industry hangouts where top radio, TV and movie personalities, recording artists, promotion people and executives all came to mingle. J.J. Johnson lived the Hollywood glamour life that most people, even other radio people, only dreamed of. In this book, he takes you behind the scenes and makes clear as to how pre-deregulation radio worked and why it worked that way. And, sometimes, why it didn't work. He'll guide you into face-to-face encounters with some of the iconic artists and seminal events of the time; from the landmark network music special, "Motown 25," where Michael Jackson made his transition from star to superstar, to the 1992 Los Angeles riots. He was there for all of that and much more. If you were ever curious as to what was really going on with that guy behind the speakers in your car, this is the book! One industry veteran stated, "You can learn more from these pages than any broadcast school in the country." Said another; "If you've ever wondered what it is like to be on the air playing music and chatting with the hottest entertainers in music, TV, the movies, or stage, then read this book. It's funny, informative, and insightful." So, prepare to meet the famous and the extraordinary; a cast of characters in a world of entertainment that seems too outlandish to have been real. Except it was.

I had to stop reading this long enough to write a few words.

Before I talk about this book, I need to disclose that J.J. and I worked together at KDAY for about fifteen years. During that time, I came to know J.J. very well. A word I have always used to describe him is "professional."

You see, J.J. and I both "grew up" in the radio business by working for the same company early in our careers. I was at KHJ/Los Angeles, he was with KFRC/San Francisco. Both radio stations were owned by RKO General and we shared the same management and music format. What the RKO "experience" taught us was professionalism. You can either laugh off all your mistakes by using the standard joke, "Well, it doesn't matter because no one is listening." Or you can learn from your mistakes with the belief that everyone in town heard you screw up. RKO people always took the high road. Things were measured not in minutes, but in fractions of one second. Every word in a commercial was important. Everything you said on-the-air had to be brief and meaningful. Every transition from one song to another, or one commercial to another, was meticulously calculated.

Over the past year or so, J.J. has been writing portions of this book which he has shared along the way. It has been amazing to read each of these stories because I remember so many of them. As I continue to read, I'm amazed by his accuracy, and the way he weaves this magnificent rendering of the way things were. There is an awesome amount of detail clearly explaining our business -- music radio.

This is an absolute must read for anyone in or thinking about going into broadcasting. You can learn more from these pages than any broadcast school in the country. And, you learn from a master craftsman.

I also recommend this for anyone who is or has been in the radio industry, and definitely for those who just listen to the radio and would like to get a behind-the-scenes peek at what happens every day.

Having said all this, I can now get back to the book.

Thank you, J.J. Your book is a genuine gift.

J.J. Johnson captures the humble beginnings and then a full career that anyone who has been in the on-air radio (or programming) or music business will relate. And will relish every word on every page.

Industry vets will have hard time putting this book down. Reading it the first time all the way through will likely be a common experience for those who have been there and done that.

Being a disk jockey, programmer, music director (consultant, voice-over person, record promoter or A&R person) is a unique life. In some ways it is show biz, in other ways it is like living outside of reality while chronicling it and helping to make it happen. J.J. Johnson captures the special realities and personal aspects of such a life. It is a delightful read. If J.J. were to write a sequel, I'd be first on line to get a copy.

Aircheck: Life in Music Radio is a must read for anyone who was either in the industry or simply enjoyed listening to the radio. J. J. Johnson was in the right places at the right times to develop and enjoy a remarkable career as a radio broadcaster. He provides perspectives as an impressionable youth drawn to radio as his passion, moving up the ranks as an on-air personality, and handling the demanding role as a manager; and succeeding at each step. The writing is crisp and clear for anyone to follow. As a fellow writer of the Top 40 radio era, I appreciate the added perspective that J.J. Johnson has contributed to document this important era in music and broadcast history.

J. J. Johnson has done in his radio broadcasting career more than most. His book, 'Aircheck: Life in Music Radio', mirrors his 'consummate professional' personality. If you have wondered what it's like being a disc jockey, then read this book. If you've ever wondered what it is like to be on the air playing music and chatting with the hottest entertainers in music, TV, the movies, or stage, then read this book. It's funny, informative, and insightful.

Its an insightful and revealing behind-the-show-look at as well as into an obscure but important performer in the entertainment biz---the radio DJ.
JJ Johnson came along during the heyday of broadcast radio and became a big time Voice presenting the top hits with aplomb and panache over 3 decades. His personal story in so doing is well told and interesting as a slice of life we dont ordinarily get to experience.
