HASH(0x96742c3c) étoiles sur 5 Small-Scale Respighi From St. Paul 25 mai 2016
Par Erik North - Publié sur Amazon.com
Though he was known for large orchestral spectaculars, such as the Roman Triptych and various orchestrations of the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach, that were an outgrowth of his having learned from a master orchestrator in Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Ottorino Respighi could also do things on a smaller scale that were just as valid, and didn’t require quite as much in the way of orchestral resources. Oftentimes the works he composed for such forces were based on totally or mostly obscure works from the Baroque and/or Renaissance periods. Such is the case with the works featured on this Teldec recording by conductor Hugh Wolff and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

Accentuating Respighi’s obsessions with the music of centuries past, Wolff and the S.P.C.O. venture into the first and third suites of the composer’s Ancient Airs and Dances For The Lute, which were based on works by very obscure Italian composers of the Renaissance. These particular suites are for a classical-sized orchestra that includes the presence of horns and trumpets, ornamented with a harpsichord, but no timpani (the Second Suite has those, and trombones, on its concluding Bergamasca).

The five-part suite “Gli Ucceli”, or “The Birds”, utilizes an even smaller orchestra and, in its use of woodwind instruments to simulate various members of the avian family, again based on compositions from the distant past, it is one of Respighi’s most beloved works, small in scale but eminently approachable. The performance here by Wolff and the S.P.C.O. matches the one by Edo De Waart and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra that I have also reviewed very recently.

The final work here is the “Botticelli Triptych, a three-part suite inspired by the composer’s visit to Washington D.C. in 1927 and based on his impressions of three paintings by the 15th century painter Sandro Botticelli: “La Primavera” (Spring); “L’Adorazione Dei Magi” (The Adoration of the Magi); and “La Nascita Di Venere” (The Birth Of Venus). Besides being a thoroughly wonderful example of Respighi’s orchestral technique, there is a certain religious quality to this work as well.

Along with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the New York Chamber Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra has long been one of America’s finest smaller orchestral ensembles; and this Respighi recording, under the stewardship of Wolff, shows why that should be the case. This recording cannot be recommended highly enough.
