Présentation de l'éditeur

Frits Barend and Henk van Dorp interviewed Johan Cruyff from 1974 to 1986 for Vrij Nederland and from 1987 to 1997 for Nieuwe Revu. Cruyff also made countless appearances on their popular radio and TV shows in Holland. In Ajax, Barcelona, Cruyff: The ABC of an Obstinate Maestro, which was authorised by Cruyff, Barend and Van Dorp have brought together the best of their interviews and features on Johan Cruyff. The book offers a scintillating portrait of a phenomenal sportsman, who still grips mass audiences with his opinions on football, his quirky statements, his analyses and general unpredictability. Not only was Cruyff a joy to watch in action - as the coach of Ajax and Barcelona he has also been a stadium filler with his characteristic brand of attacking one-touch football, which has had such an impact on the game all over the world. Ajax, Barcelona, Cruyff deals for the most part with Cruyff's own personal 'ABC'. Responding to critical and probing questions from Barend and Van Dorp, the idiosyncratic maestro talks on various wide-ranging topics: the glory of Ajax in the seventies, the 1974 World Cup, the Netherlands team, his 'second love' Barcelona, the Ajax system, Feyenoord, his son Jordi, players such as Koeman, Rijkaard and Van Basten, the strategy of attack, taking a penalty, doctors, saying goodbye, God and life beyond football. The interviews read like personal memoirs and offer a kaleidoscopic view of the sporting life of Holland's most famous soccer star ever. --Ce texte fait référence à une édition épuisée ou non disponible de ce titre.

Ajax, Barcelona, Cruyff is one of my favourite football books. It's fascinating to read Cruijff's opinions on football. They're so clear - he gets across in a sentence more than you'll ever hear from most footballers. Some of it is so simple, but it really makes sense. Just as an example, he says that the real indication of a good footballer isn't what he can do when he's got lots of space, it's what he can do with none. When I read that, Jack Charlton's "put 'em under pressure" tactics with Ireland, and images of Denis Bergkamp doing things with his first touch that most footballers can't in three come to mind. He says that a good footballer needs just two things - first touch and passing. Everything else is finesse. Think of how the Dutch at their best, or the Brazilians, or Barcelona play - they can all pass a team to death.

The book is written by a couple of Dutch journalists. Cruyff wasn't too generous with interviews - he would charge for them when he did them at all. He trusted the guys who wrote the book though, and they had more access to him than any other journalists. The material in the book comes from interviews with Cruijff over the years, and it makes for fascinating reading.

this is definitely a good book about a great and visionary football man. you well catch glimpse of cruyff life, ideas, notes about his different managerial experience and even his conflicts againts some of the directors that were above him.
the only Disappointment personally is that i didn't catch most of the things cruyff did in his days due to being too young to watch and understand that so you well have the best experience if you did manage to catch some of his famous games with holland and ajax and later with barcelona.

I first knew Johan Cruyff when he played for Barcelona. When I watched him on TV when he played for Holland in the 1974 world cup I was mesmerized by his skill and athleticism. When he came to the USA in the old NASL, I got to see him play in person in Tulsa, OK. I went out on the field after the game and got a chance to talk to him and get his autograph.

Not a traditional book, but an entertaining one nonetheless. A series of exchanges between the author and Cruyff over the years in which Cruyff gives his somewhat idiosyncratic footballing philosophy. I found him brilliant, even if a bit arrogant. That said, if I somehow find myself owning a football club, Cruyff would be the first one I would try and hire.
